Predicted Wigan Athletic line-up to face Rotherham in the Championship

Wigan Athletic will be looking to put the disappointment of last weekend’s loss to QPR behind them when they face Rotherham at home on Saturday.

Paul Cook will be desperate to get his side back on track after an impressive start to the season which has seen them win two of their opening five games. But Rotherham will pose a different challenge and are on a high after beating Millwall 1-0 on Sunday.

Team News

Wigan will be without Michael Jacobs again as he suffered a hamstring pull at Stoke City. Gavin Massey hobbled off in the first half against QPR and could miss the Rotherham clash.

Darron Gibson, meanwhile, remains sidelined with a groin tear.

Probable Wigan XI

Formation: 4-2-3-1

Manager: Paul Cook

Christian Walton (GK)

Walton will be itching to keep a clean sheet at home on Saturday.

Nathan Byrne (RB)

Byrne returned from injury at QPR and gave a display of his quality. A solid display in the previous game should see him continue in his usual position.

Chey Dunkley (CB)

Dunkley is Wigan’s leader at the back and he will need to be at his best if Cook’s side are to win all three points against Rotherham.

Cedric Kipre (CB)

Kipre is usually a solid centre-back but can have lapses in concentration. He needs to put in a strong display at the back to help Wigan bounce back from a disappointing defeat at QPR.

Antonee Robinson (LB)

Robinson gives his everything when on the pitch. An industrious full-back, he is a certain starter at the weekend.

Sam Morsy (CM)

Morsy’s presence in the middle of the park is vital as he keeps Wigan ticking. He is a very good operator of the ball and can play between the lines to hurt the opposition.

Lee Evans (CM)

Evans is a player who adds real quality to Wigan’s midfield. He is expected to start at the heart of the midfield.

Josh Windass (LW)

Windass is always a threat going forward and has the ability to make a real difference. He needs to deliver a strong performance at the weekend to help Wigan bounce back from the disappointing defeat.

Nick Powell (CAM)

Powell is Wigan’s chief creator as he always carries a threat on the ball. His creativity and guile would be important to split open Rotherham’s defence on Saturday.

Nick Powell

Callum McManaman (RW)

With his pace and directness, McManaman can cause Rotherham defenders all kinds of problems. With Massey injured, McManaman pops up as the ideal choice to replace him.

Will Grigg (ST)

Grigg needs to fire on all cylinders on Saturday if Wigan are to put Rotherham to the sword.
