Comparing Lucas Moura and Malcom – Why Tottenham Should Sign The Former Ahead Of The 20-year-old

Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly interested in January moves for two of the most sought-after attackers in the ongoing winter window. Lucas Moura of PSG and Bordeaux’s Malcom have been linked with every possible Premier League club this season but Spurs are understood to be edging closer to signing them. It is unsure as to whether or not Mauricio Pochettino wants both of them at the club but even if he can manage to sign one of them, it will be good business for the club.

Their recent 1-1 draw against Southampton harshly highlighted a lot of weaknesses in their squad. They clearly need a new attacker in their team but whom should they sign out of the two?

Given the fact that the £35m-rated Moura has played just 79 minutes of first-team football in the 2017/18 season so far and has fallen well down the pecking order at the Parc des Princes, it will be unfair to compare them based on stats since Malcom, who is also rated at £35m, has played almost every game for Bordeaux. Both players possess similar skills and abilities, and since Tottenham already possess quite a few top-class attackers, Pochettino must arrive at a decision and pick one over the other.

Straight off the bat, there is no doubt that the PSG man is a lot more experienced than the young Brazilian. He has plenty of experience playing in the Champions League and the only reason he has struggled for game time this season is due to the summer arrivals of Kylian Mbappe and Neymar. He is a more well-rounded option as well and Moura can still work wonders by starting afresh at a club like Tottenham. To be fair, it seems more sensible to prioritise signing him over Malcom.

Malcom

Although Malcom has been in impressive form throughout the season so far, there will be a certain amount of risk associated with his signature. He has no caps for the Brazilian national side yet and has no prior experience of European football either.

Solely based on his performances in France, the young star might seem like a good option on paper but when it truly comes down to the finer details, he lacks the kind of finesse a player like Moura boasts of. Malcom is an equally good attacker but perhaps he needs to stay where he is and focus on his development instead of jumping to a foreign league right now.

Malcom is undoubtedly talented and has tremendous potential but so did the likes of Clinton Njie and Georges-Kevin Nkoudou. They struggled to adjust to the rigours of the Premier League and simply seemed like a shadow of their former selves. Hence, given a choice, Pochettino will be better off by signing Moura over the 20-year-old Malcom.
