Comparing Klopp’s Primary Defensive Target With Liverpool’s Current Squad Player – Who Wins The Battle?

Liverpool Klopp

Liverpool are still smarting from their 3-1 loss to Sevilla in the Europa League and the Reds are all set to launch a bid for a star in the making to replace Alberto Moreno. The Liverpool left-back had a poor game in the final and has often shown his inconsistency and well his lack of defending ability in the Premier League this season as well.

The Merseyside club are looking to replace him with Leicester City’s Ben Chilwell reports telegraph, who also claim that Chilwell will be Klopp’s priority signing this summer. The 19-year-old might not have played all too many Premier League games but he did do well in the Championship and will look to make a mark in the top flight of English football next season.

Chilwell might not be the oldest player out there or the one with the most experience but he does have a few stats to prove that he could do a little better than Moreno for Liverpool. We compare the two left-backs thanks to Squawka and only compare the per 90 stats as they would be the best judge of the players’ capabilities.

An Englishman outshining a Spaniard

Ben Chilwell

Chilwell obviously has not played the same number of games as Alberto Moreno but he still has a better defence score compared to the Liverpool defender. The 19-year-old also has more successful passes per 90 minutes compared to Moreno with 37.3 while the Spaniard from Anfield has 36.9 to his name.

Moreno does have better stats when it comes to winning tackles, the Liverpool man has 2.43 tackles per 90 minutes compared to 1.5 for Chilwell in the last campaign. The English star though is slightly better at taking on defenders with a 48% success rate while Moreno just is a little behind with 47% for Liverpool.

Moreno also shades it when it comes to interceptions with 2.22 this season compared to Chilwell’s 2.18, not much being shown to separate the two defenders. Blocks is one stat which Chilwell does own with 0.41 blocks per 90 minutes compared to 0.18 for Moreno this season.

Chilwell still does not have the stats to show that he is a better player than Alberto Moreno but he does have similar numbers to the 23-year-old Spaniard who has spent a couple of seasons at the Merseyside club. Chilwell would make a great addition to the squad and with his future not set at Leicester City, Liverpool could well snap him up from under Claudio Ranieri’s nose, the only thing to see is if he does start for the Reds or warms the bench in the future.
