Comparing Arsenal’s £26.5m star and Liverpool’s £43.7m new arrival – Who will fare better this season?

Fabinho vs Lucas Torreira: Which midfielder will shine in the Premier League?

Central midfielders were all the rage across England in the recently concluded summer transfer window. Chelsea signed Jorginho from Napoli and Manchester United bolstered their midfield by signing Fred. Liverpool and Arsenal also followed suit with the additions of Fabinho and Lucas Torreira respectively.

Now, questions will arise as to which club have signed the better player. In particular, Fabinho and Lucas Torreira could be compared thoroughly.

To start with, Fabinho joined Liverpool from AS Monaco for £43.7m. He is a robust defensive midfielder who knows how to shield the back line. The player also has the required athleticism to break his opponents’ plays and also drive his team forward in the attack.

Lucas Torreira, on the other hand, joined the Gunners from Sampdoria for £26.5m after Uruguay were dumped out of the World Cup. The combative Uruguayan can shield the defence and contribute to the attack as well.

Now, let us have a detailed statistical comparison based on last season.

Fabinho made a total of 1491 successful passes in 31 Ligue 1 games last season, while Torreira completed 1689 successful passes in 33 Serie A matches. Interestingly, both the players registered an 87% pass completion rate.

Fabinho made 27 key passes and created 30 chances for Monaco last term. Torreira, on the other hand, made 32 key passes and created 33 chances. Fabinho found the back of the net six times for the Ligue 1 club, whereas Torreira scored four goals in the Serie A.

As far as the defensive aspect of the game is concerned, Torreira easily edges past Fabinho. The Uruguayan won 66 tackles while making 67 interceptions and 16 blocks. In comparison to Torreira, Fabinho won 56 tackles, made 46 interceptions and 11 blocks. He also picked up eight yellow cards in contrast to Torreira’s six.

As far as the statistics are concerned, Torreira seems more organised and defensively sound.

In Torreira, Arsenal have finally secured a reliable defensive midfielder. He possesses the ability to rob possession and can trouble attackers across the pitch.

Meanwhile, Fabinho is an industrious player who is known to utilize his tenacity and physicality to keep the opposition at bay. He is not only a top tackler but also a threat in the air. The Brazilian, who can also play in central defence and at right-back, would be an efficient player at the base of Liverpool’s midfield.
