According to a report in Sun, Premier League giants Chelsea are planning a £50m swoop for Paris Saint-Germain striker Edinson Cavani. Blues manager Maurizio Sarri is desperate to bolster his attacking line, especially the goal-scoring department before the transfer window shuts.
As per the report, there have been talks going on about a possible swap deal where Alvaro Morata will go to AC Milan in exchange for Gonzalo Higuain. However, that has not stopped the latest updates on Cavani being linked with a move to the Stamford Bridge.
The Uruguayan striker has been one of the most consistent players in the European circuit for the past few years now. In a PSG team full of superstars like Kylian Mbappe and Neymar, the 31-year-old has done well to score his quota of goals.
Here’s why Chelsea should do everything to sign him in this transfer window:
If we take a look at the league stats of this season, the two Chelsea strikers Alvaro Morata and Olivier Giroud have scored a combined of six goals in 16 appearances each. Hence, out of the 38 goals netted by the Blues this campaign, the duo has put in one-sixth of it.
That really makes the case for this club to look for a new striker in the transfer window. The Blues are even slipping a bit in the race for a top-four finish with the lack of a lethal goal-scorer, let alone being in touch with either of Liverpool or Manchester City.
It is pretty evident now that Morata won’t really improve in the next months, having been in a rough patch ever since he arrived in the summer of 2017. Thus, the club needs to do everything to get someone like Cavani over the line as he can be a good attack partner to Eden Hazard.
The Belgian loves to play alongside a target man or a willing runner in behind the defensive line. The Uruguayan is one of the best when it comes to linking up with fellow quality players and making deadly runs into the box.
One of his famous darts is towards the near post, where he comes from nowhere and finishes without getting noticed by the centre-backs.
The most important thing is that the 31-year-old is a proven goal-scorer wherever he has played and would be a perfect addition as Sarri looks to bridge the gap between his team and the league’s top two.
