Enough is enough: It’s time for Chelsea to get rid of their £40m flop star ahead of the new era under Lampard

Chelsea opinion: Chelsea should sell Tiemoue Bakayoko

According to a report in The Metro, Chelsea’s new manager Frank Lampard is looking to make way for French international Tiemoue Bakayoko from Stamford Bridge despite a transfer ban being imposed on the club for the season.

Bakayoko was brought in by the Chelsea hierarchy in the 2017/18 season for £40m when Antonio Conte was the head coach. Conte had helped the side win the Premier League in the season before and much was expected of Bakayoko.

He was seen as the successor to Nemanja Matic in the holding midfield position alongside N’golo Kante. Bakayoko had come off an extremely successful season at Monaco under Leonardo Jardim, where they went on to win the Ligue 1 title and made it to the Champions League semi-finals.

However, the move didn’t go according to plan as Bakayoko struggled to settle in alongside N’golo Kante. The profiles of the two players are quite similar as they’re both players who help in the transition play. Matic was a player who brought the ball out and held his position, and it was possibly asking too much of Bakayoko to fill a role he wasn’t necessarily suited to.

He was sent out on loan last season to AC Milan and after making a slow start to his time at the San Siro, he went onto become a very important figure during the second half of the season and was finally enjoying his football again.

Frank Lampard has plenty of options in the midfield, with Mateo Kovacic, Jorginho, N’golo Kante, Ross Barkley, Mason Mount and Ruben Loftus-Cheek in the ranks. Bakayoko would be surplus to requirements and for his own sake, he should seek a move out of England.

Frank Lampard

Lampard needs to put a stamp on his side and he needs to start by getting rid of players, who do not have a place in the long-term vision of the club. He has a very challenging season and needs to be allowed to build a team in his own image, and that starts by getting rid of some of the deadwood.

Conclusion

The pressure put on by the media is something that Bakayoko could take a break from. For his own good and that of Chelsea, it’s best if they part ways in an amicable fashion.
