Chelsea should hold onto this £27million star amidst interest from Italy – Agree?

Why Chelsea should keep hold of Davide Zappacosta this season

Torino are exploring the prospect of re-signing Chelsea full-back Davide Zappacosta in January, as per a report from Calciomercato.

Chelsea signed the Italy international from Torino in the summer transfer window of 2017, but he’s rarely been able to break into the starting XI under Antonio Conte or Maurizio Sarri.

Davide Zappacosta has played in each of Chelsea’s three Europa League group stage games this season but made only one appearance in the Premier League, which came in a brief cameo in the Blues’ 4-1 victory against Cardiff City in September.

Now with Torino looking to bring Zappacosta back to Italy, should Maurizio Sarri let him go?

Davide Zappacosta

Definitely not. Zappacosta, who joined the club for £27million, has managed to earn just 6 minutes of playing time in the Premier League this season which must be frustrating. The Italian defender has been opportunities in the cup competitions and he has excelled on the right. In all, he has only made five appearances for the Blues this season with two assists to his name across all competitions.

The 26-year-old is a well-rounded attacking full-back that loves to maraud forward and join the team’s attacks. Zappacosta is an attacking manager’s delight as the player enjoys staying on the front foot. He is a versatile customer and has often proven to be quite useful on both ends of the pitch.

The Italy international is a tireless worker, can run with the ball at his feet and whip in dangerous crosses in the box. Zappacosta played a part in all three of Chelsea’s goals in the 3-2 victory over Derby County in the Carabao Cup earlier this week. He was a fantastic attacking outlet on the right, bombing up and down creating a number of problems for the Derby defenders with his accurate crosses in the box.

And while the 26-year-old is excellent going forward, Zappacosta struggles defensively and perhaps that could be the reason why Sarri hasn’t given him opportunities in the Premier League.

But truth to be told, Sarri should hand Zappacosta a chance in the Premier League as Cesar Azpilicueta—one of the cornerstones of Chelsea’s title wins in 2014 and 2017—has struggled to cope up with the high-intense style of play under the Italian tactician.

Sarri wants his full-backs to be extremely attacking and he should definitely consider handing Zappacosta a run in the Premier League.

As far as letting Zappacosta leave Stamford Bridge midway through the season is concerned, Sarri shouldn’t let it happen as he is competing on all fronts in his debut campaign in England. The Italian defender has proven to be a great squad player and Chelsea need depth in the squad to challenge for all silverware this season.

All in all, Zappacosta is a player that has to be kept in the squad and not sold at any cost.
