Chelsea retaining this first-team star who is in the final year of his contract would be a silly move – Here’s why

Chelsea opinion: Chelsea should let go of Willian

According to reports in the Daily Express, Chelsea are considering to depart with the services of their Brazilian winger, Willian, who will be in the final year of his contract. The report states that Barcelona are interested in signing him.

The Brazilian has had a lot of success since his deadline day move to Chelsea in the 2013-14 season.

He won the Premier League and League Cup in his second season at the club under Jose Mourinho. He won another Premier League under Antonio Conte in the 2016-17 season but wasn’t always a part of his plans.

With Conte preferring Pedro to the Brazilian. However, Willian stayed put and was part of an FA Cup-winning team in the 2017/18 term and won the Europa League with Maurizio Sarri last season.

Willian has been a very good servant to the Blues over the last few years. His versatility, which allows him to play in most forward positions, has been vital over the years.

Willian is also the primary set-piece taker for the Blues and is now one of their senior players, however, it is time that Chelsea made way for him with the Blues heading into a new era.

Chelsea bought Christian Pulisic from Borussia Dortmund and also have talents like Callum Hudson-Odoi coming through. Hudson-Odoi is already an international after bursting through the scene in the second half of last season.

Although he’s currently nursing an injury, Chelsea can manage with the likes of Pedro and Christian Pulisic till the 18-year-old is back.

Frank Lampard is tactically flexible as he showed at Derby last season and even used a front-two during the pre-season.

Chelsea aren’t just entering a new era because of Lampard’s presence; the transfer ban will also force them to find value in their reputed youth academy, which has been successful domestically and in Europe recently.

The loss of their star player, Eden Hazard, will also be a massive change that they’ll have to adapt to. The Belgian was so instrumental to their success in the last 7 seasons. They need to move on from and also from Willian.

Conclusion

Willian will be taking minutes which could help these younger players need in order to develop and Chelsea would rather generate some funds than lose him for nothing next season.

The Brazilian has been a great servant for the Blues and should leave on a high.
