Chelsea opinion: Chelsea should offload Davide Zappacosta

According to a report in the Sun, Chelsea’s new manager Frank Lampard is looking to offload Davide Zappacosta, despite a transfer ban being imposed on the club.

Zappacosta was brought in by the Chelsea hierarchy in the 2017/18 season when Antonio Conte was the head coach.

Conte had helped the side win the Premier League the season before and should have gotten the players he was hoping to get. However, signing Zappacosta was a poor move.

Frank Lampard has plenty of options at right-back with Cesar Azpiliqueta likely to start as the club captain. There’s also the small matter of giving Reece James some minutes, as he’s a phenomenal talent and looks like he’s ready at only 19.

James was outstanding for Wigan last season, taking free-kicks, defending bravely and running up and down the flank. James truly deserves a starting place, even more so after being linked with a move to Crystal Palace.

In Chelsea’s pre-season friendlies, Lampard has shown that he’s prepared to give the club’s talented bunch of youth players a chance to impress and it’ll be important that he gets the likes of Zappacosta to leave.

The Italian has been a model professional despite his difficulty in adapting to English soil and Lampard should do him a favour by allowing him to leave.

Lampard needs to put a stamp on this side and he needs to start by getting rid of players who do not have a place in the long-term vision of the club. He has a very challenging season ahead and needs to be allowed to build a team in his own image. That starts by getting rid of some of the deadwood.

Conclusion

Chelsea face a stern test against Manchester United at Old Trafford this Sunday and he’ll need to get his players prepared, as the Red Devils also have to redeem themselves.

Chelsea have a great chance of making a perfect start and will be hoping that they can carry that momentum forward for the rest of their campaign.
