“They get scared”: Former Celtic star worried about Neil Lennon’s side ahead of Europa League clash

Charlie Nicholas fears Celtic will struggle against Rennes

Celtic start their Europa League campaign against Rennes and have a tough group, with CFR Cluj and Lazio as the other participants in the group.

The Hoops were hopeful of making it to the Champions League but were dumped out in the qualifying rounds.

They beat AIK to make it to the Europa League but their struggles in Europe have been brought up by former striker Charlie Nicholas.

Rennes lie second in Ligue 1 behind PSG and have lost just one game in the league this season. Nicholas was speaking to Sky Sports (h/t Daily Record) and wasn’t sure of their performance:

“Rennes have started very well in Ligue 1. I am hoping that M’Baye Niang will not be playing.

“He is lightning quick, almost a lesser version of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. These guys can play and move, and that is what Celtic struggle against.”

Celtic struggle away from home

The former Celtic star added that the Scottish giants will try to play on the counter but their failings come to light in away games:

“They get scared when they travel away from home. They don’t know where to pitch their defence and whether to play a squeezing game or not.”

Europe hasn’t been a happy hunting ground for the Hoops in recent years and the days of regular Champions League participation are long gone.

The Europa League does feature some tough teams in the other groups and Neil Lennon’s team have to be at their best to progress to the knockout stage.
