Champions League Group G Preview: Chelsea Gets An Easy Group

Share

If there is one thing that Jose Mourinho wants to achieve in his time at Chelsea, it is to win the Champions League with his beloved Blues. The Portuguese has not managed to take Chelsea to the top of the Champions League and would love to achieve that. The Blues haven’t been at their best this season and have struggled to find their rhythm, could the Champions League be their saviour this season?

The easiest group for the English Champions

The fact that Chelsea were part of pot 1 was great news but they still had a chance of meeting some really tough opponents from the other pots. Fortunately for Jose Mourinho and his team, the club has got the easiest group, at least from English contingent.

The Premier League champions will face FC Porto, Dynamo Kiev and Maccabi Tel Aviv. Jose Mourinho should be extremely pleased with the draw and should find it easy to qualify from this group. The only hard game they could have are the away games against Porto and Kiev but barring those two ties, this is a pretty straight forward group.

Chelsea would relish taking on their opponents and proving some points to a few. They have been humbled quite a lot in the Premier League and this group would provide some amount of relief from the scrutiny that the club have been facing back in England. Of course this all could go sour should Porto or any other club decide to have a go at the Blues.

There really couldn’t have been an easier group for the Blues, Jose Mourinho will have a sort of home coming as he returns to the club that he won his first Champions League with, Porto. There will be little emotion shown by the Portuguese as he has to ensure the Blues qualify first. Chelsea have a very good record against Porto as they have always found the back of the net against them.

The other two clubs aren’t small fry though as they have won their respective leagues last season but they shouldn’t pose a real threat to Chelsea, unless the Blues decide to play in a similar fashion to what they have been doing this season. Jose Mourinho knows that the Champions League is something that is missing from his CV at Chelsea and this group could be the silver lining in this season as he chases that elusive crown.

Group G: Chelsea, FC Porto, Dynamo Kiev, Maccabi Tel Aviv
