Celtic would be wise to offload this 23-year-old for £300,000 – Here is why

Why Celtic are doing the right thing by offloading Lewis Morgan

According to the Daily Mail, MLS side Inter Miami have agreed on terms with Celtic winger Lewis Morgan ahead of a move.

Lewis Morgan, 23, who has had loan spells with St Mirren and Sunderland in recent seasons, has made 18 appearances for Neil Lennon’s side this campaign and scored twice, with both goals coming in the Europa League.

He is set to make a £300,000 switch to join David Beckham’s MLS side Inter Miami, which is coached by Diego Alonso, the report adds.

That being said, have Celtic done the right thing by allowing Morgan to leave the club?

A defeat to Rangers prior to the winter break not only endangered Celtic’s ‘nine in a row’ mission but also highlighted the limitations that need to be addressed during the January transfer window.

They are highly reliant on Odsonne Edouard high up the pitch with Leigh Griffiths and Vakoun Issouf Bayo offering little as back up, meaning the Hoops’ priority should be to bring in a new centre-forward.

As vital as it is for Celtic to strengthen their squad, Neil Lennon must also free up some space by offloading a couple of fringe players. And thus, offloading Lewis Morgan would be the right move.

Morgan joined Celtic in January 2018 after starring for St Mirren in the Scottish Championship. He returned to Paisley on loan for the remainder of the 18/19 season before joining Sunderland on a six-month loan deal after failing to break into the Celtic squad.

The Scotsman played in the League One play-off with the Black Cats last year before returning to Parkhead.

The 23-year-old started up top in the Betfred Cup final win over Rangers after netting a Europa League goal against Rennes. But Morgan has since played rarely for the Hoops, amassing a total of just 18 appearances till date.

In reality, the Scotland international is not as good as the other attacking players such as Ryan Christie, James Forrest and Mikey Johnston.

More news

As Morgan has struggled for game time at Celtic this season, a move to Inter Miami would be massive. He has struggled to establish himself as a key player for Lennon’s side and a move away from Parkhead could be best for all parties.

In return, Celtic would rather have the six-figure fee added to their January transfer kitty.

Verdict

Having allowed Scott Sinclair to leave for Preston earlier this transfer window, Celtic would be smart to sell Morgan. The Scotsman needs to bring his career back on track and a move to MLS should be the right move for him.
