Celtic signing this 21-year-old Derby starlet would reduce the pain of Benkovic’s departure – opinion

Celtic FC opinion: Should the Hoops sign Fikayo Tomori?

According to a report from the Daily Star, Celtic are keen to make a move for Chelsea’s exciting young defender Fikayo Tomori in the summer. The Canadian-born Englishman is currently on loan at Championship side Derby County for whom he been a rock at the back.

The report reveals that Derby boss Frank Lampard will try to sign the young defender if they secure promotion to the Premier League. Celtic boss Neil Lennon will try to sign Tomori despite the Rams’ interest in the summer.

Lennon has done a decent job since taking over from Brendan Rodgers a few months ago. The Hoops boss has led them to their 8th successive league title but his future at the helm of the club is still uncertain.

However, Lennon claimed that he is confident of remaining in charge at Celtic Park and said that he knows how to win titles, having played a part in 10 of Celtic’s last 14 trophies.

However, the gap between them and Rangers has shortened to just 6 points, which makes the need for strengthening massive, irrespective of who is in charge.

Filip Benkovic will return to Leicester City on completion of his loan spell at the end of the season, while Dedryck Boyata is also expected to leave the club with his contract expiring in the coming weeks.

A new central defender has to be a priority for the Hoops and Fikayo Tomori would be an incredible signing.

The 21-year-old has been an integral part of Derby’s bid for promotion and had an incredible game against Leeds United in the semi-final second leg to help his side reach the final.

Despite being so young, Tomori has been a leader at the back and his organization of the defence has proven how good he can be in the coming years. Unlike most centre-halves, the Chelsea man is rapid and is almost never burned for pace.

His positioning has been unbelievable for his age and his tackling has arguably been one of the best in the league. Tomori is intelligent in terms of reading the game and his willingness to put his body on the line makes him a real asset for the team.

Conclusion

Fikayo Tomori is destined to be a great central-defender in the coming years and if Celtic manage to lure him in the summer, their future at the back will be in brilliant hands for the considerable future.

The Chelsea man will have no shortage of suitors in the summer but Celtic should go all out to bag their man in the coming weeks.
