Celtic should surely keep hold of their 21-year-old starlet – would be crucial amidst Boyata departure

Celtic opinion – The Hoops should keep Filip Benkovic for one more season

According to a report in Daily Record, former Celtic and current Leicester City manager Brendan Rodgers has hinted that Filip Benkovic could stay at the Parkhead for another year.

Rodgers brought the Croatian U21 international to Scotland from the King Power Stadium at the start of this season on a season-long loan deal. The defender has ended up doing well for the Hoops, stabilising the back-line in many games.

With loan spell about to get over at the end of this campaign, the new Leicester manager has hinted at the possibility that the 21-year-old could be loaned back to Celtic for another season (h/t Daily Record).

Here’s why the Scottish champions must take this chance and sign Benkovic for one more year:

Benkovic has been good for Celtic at the back

Benkovic has played over 20 games in all competitions for Celtic this season despite battling through some injuries. He has had a type of impact that not many players make after going to another club on a loan deal.

The 21-year-old’s performances has been largely positive, that has helped the Hoops’ back-line big time. Hence, it won’t be a totally bad idea to keep him at the Parkhead for another season, especially when the parent club’s manager is hinting at this possibility.

Furthermore, with the Scottish Champions set to lose Dedryck Boyata, it is vital that they have centre-back options at their disposal. The continuity at the back would be vital, hence, keeping hold of a player that has spent a full season would be beneficial come next year.
