Why Celtic should sign Birger Meling before deadline day
According to a report in Scottish Sun, Scottish champions Celtic sent their scouts to have a closer look at Rosenborg left-back Birger Meling in their game against Dinamo Zagreb.
The defender has been on the Hoops’ ever since the departure of Kieran Tierney to Arsenal on the English transfer window deadline (h/t Scottish Sun).
With the Scottish window closing on 2nd September, they need to replace their star left-back.
Celtic did sign left-back Boli Bolingoli-Mbombo for £3m but their manager Neil Lennon has made it clear that he wants another signing in that position before the closure of the window. (h/t Scottish Sun)
He and his team are no stranger to Meling because they have locked horns previously in European games. The Rosenborg man is under contract till the December of next year.
Here’s why Celtic shouldn’t hesitate in forking out the cash to sign the 24-year-old:
Meling could be an ideal Tierney replacement
Birger Meling is a fantastic young left-back, who is versatile enough to play in central or defensive midfield. He can also play on the left-wing if required.
The former Stoke City and Middlesbrough U23 player has risen through the ranks in different leagues and is now a regular in the Rosenborg team. He has progressed as a player all the time, which is the most pleasing aspect.
In terms of his attributes, the Norway international possesses good pace to make runs up and down the field, is a good dribbler of the ball, can pass it with good accuracy and is an astute defender in one-v-one situations in wide areas.
It has to be said that Meling is a quality player who has enough capabilities and room for further refinement to become one of the stars in the Celtic, provided the Hoops make a firm bid for him.
