Celtic making a last-minute push to sign this £10m PL star would make all the difference for Lennon

Why Celtic would be right to sign Fraser Forster before deadline

According to a report in Football Scotland, Scottish champions Celtic are targeting a move for Southampton keeper Fraser Forster before the transfer window deadline day.

Forster, who is currently out of favour at St.Mary’s, has played for the Hoops before. If he signs for them, it would be a welcome back for him at the Parkhead.

Celtic manager Neil Lennon brought him to the club at first place from Newcastle United, before selling him for £10m to Southampton (h/t Football Scotland). Now with the former in his second stint, there is a chance that the latter could come back for his second stint at the club.

The Scottish champions are currently short on goalkeeping options, with Scott Bain injured till October and Craig Gordon being the only options. Here’s why they should sign Forster, irrespective of whether Bain would have been injured or not:

Celtic need more quality in the goal

Fraser Forster is a high-quality goalkeeper, who despite being out of favour at Southampton for some time, possesses the ability to make a difference in any other team he plays for.

In terms of his attributes, the former Celtic man has the height to cover a large portion of the goal while making save. His height also allows him to dominate his six-yard box from crosses and indirect set-pieces.

He is not that bad when it comes to exhibiting reflexes to stop lower-range shots, which is a big thing for a keeper as tall as him.

On the other hand, Celtic have Scott Bain and Craig Gordon as their options in goal. Despite the former’s injury post the Cluj game, he hasn’t been good enough to consistently be the number one keeper of the club. While the latter is 36 years old now and not expected to play every week.

Conclusion

The Scottish champions would be right to sign Fraser Forster before the transfer window deadline day. His return would enhance the quality of their back-line and make them better not just domestically, but also in Europe.
