Celtic beating Fenerbahce to sign this ball-playing 22-year-old would help their title push immensely

Why Celtic must beat Fenerbahce to sign Jairo Riedewald in January

According to a report from Football.London, Turkish giants Fenerbahce are plotting a January move for Crystal Palace defender Jairo Riedewald.

The 22-year-old has made just three appearances for the Eagles this season and none of those have come in the Premier League.

Jairo Riedewald moved to Crystal Palace from Ajax last season under then manager Frank De Boer. He wasn’t used as a regular last season, managing just 12 appearances for the Eagles last term.

And the story hasn’t changed this season either, with Riedewald struggling to find regular minutes in the Premier League. The 22-year-old’s involvement this season has been limited to the Carabao Cup, where he has made three appearances.

With Riedewald weighing up his options in January and Fenerbahce having emerged as a target, should Celtic make a move for him in January?

Brendan Rodgers has done a fabulous job at Celtic since taking over. He has not only managed to win titles but has also established Celtic as a dominant force in Scotland.

However, a lack of investment in the summer, the departure of star striker Moussa Dembele and injuries to key players saw the Hoops make a slow start to the new season.

While Celtic have recovered and finally appear to have regained their mojo, they need reinforcements in January to challenge on all fronts this term. The January transfer window will give Rodgers the perfect chance to rebuild his squad for the second half of the season.

Rodgers should concentrate on strengthening his backline before moving onto other areas of the pitch. And to bolster his defensive options, he should table a bid for Jairo Riedewald in January.

Riedewald is a versatile player who can operate in the defence as well as in defensive midfield. He is a fantastic operator of the ball and is blessed with a good technique which allows him to run comfortably with the ball at his feet.

The 22-year-old is comfortable on the ball and can make recovery runs when playing in a high-line defence.

Riedewald is good and adaptive in his position at the back and has shown quality when he was at Ajax. A ball-playing defender, the Dutchman is also a good reader of the game and uses his anticipation to make crucial tackles and interceptions.

Moreover, the 22-year-old can also be a part of a three-man defence with Dedryck Boyata and Kristoffer Ajer. The Crystal Palace ace’s versatility could come in handy for Celtic, who would be desperate to retain the title.

That said, Celtic should hijack Fenerbahce’s January move for Jairo Riedewald as he might be the perfect solution to their defensive woes.
