Cause for regret? – Here’s why Watford have missed a trick by failing to sign this searing 24-year-old attacker

Why Watford should have signed PSV Eindhoven star Gaston Pereiro

Back in July, a report from Watford Observer had claimed that Watford were interested in signing PSV Eindhoven attacker Gaston Pereiro. However, a deal didn’t go through and the Uruguayan has now stayed with PSV Eindhoven.

Gaston Pereiro, 24, has been a huge hit at PSV Eindhoven since joining from Nacional in 2015, scoring 47 goals from 146 games. He enjoyed a really solid 2018/19 campaign in the Eredivisie, managing 10 goals and six assists in 27 games. The attacker’s creative displays for PSV last season caught the eye of Watford, but they were unable to thrash out a deal for the Uruguayan.

The Hornets have not had an ideal start to the new Premier League campaign as they were beaten convincingly at home by Brighton.

Gracia did bring in the likes of Craig Dawson, Tom Dele-Bashiru, Joao Pedro, Danny Welbeck and Ismaila Sarr. After snapping up Welbeck on a free transfer and breaking the transfer record for Sarr, signing Gaston Pereiro would have been a massive statement from Watford.

Pereiro is a tall and physically blessed winger who can also play through the middle as a No.10 and as a secondary striker. He has a decent turn of pace, is direct and loves to bamboozle defenders with his silky dribbling skills. The Uruguay international is strong on the ball and has the ability to pick a pass in the final third.

A quality crosser of the ball, the 24-year-old is also a composed finisher in front of goal. His versatility is an asset and would have given Gracia a lot of flexibility in the attack. Pereiro’s long-range shooting is a dangerous asset, while he can prove to be a handful for any opposition with his direct style of play.

The ex-Nacional starlet would have undoubtedly bolstered Watford’s attacking ranks, whilst giving them a natural boost in their top-six ambitions.

Missing out on a player of Pereiro’s quality could come back to haunt Watford, particularly with the club having high ambitions this season. Hence, Watford have missed a big trick by not getting the Uruguay international’s deal over the line during the summer transfer window.
