West Ham United will go head to head against London rivals Tottenham Hotspur, in the Round of 16 stage of the Carabao Cup, on Wednesday night, at the Wembley Stadium.
The Hammers find themselves under intense pressure coming into the game, following their 3-0 loss to Brighton & Hove Albion this past weekend in the Premier League. Manager Slaven Bilic is under the scanner and could face the axe if results don’t go his team’s way in the coming few games. The two teams have already faced each other in the Premier League this term, with Spurs coming out 3-2 winners and West Ham will be keen on avoiding a similar fate.
Striker Diafra Sakho is a slight doubt to feature due to a back strain, while defender James Collins is another one who’s doubtful to be involved, owing to an ankle problem. Andy Carroll will be back after serving his one match ban.
Here’s how the Hammers could take the field at the Wembley against Spurs:
Adrian has been the preferred option between the sticks for the cup competitions. Should start ahead of Joe Hart.
With Pablo Zabaleta not covering himself in glory against the Seagulls on Friday night, Sam Byram could get a look in at right-back for the cup tie.
The youngster has been impressive each time he’s been given a chance and might be backed to shine against Tottenham on Wednesday night.
The Italian is the most likely candidate to partner the youngster in the heart of the defence, having started the last cup tie as well.
The 27-year old Englishman will take the left-back slot against Spurs on Wednesday, after sitting out against Brighton. Arthur Masuaku should make way.
The Spanish midfielder is a constant fixture in the middle of the park for the Hammers and that is unlikely to change for the cup game.
The young midfielder made an appearance from the bench on Friday night and might be in for a starting role against Tottenham.
The England international did not have the best of the games against Brighton on Friday, and will be keen on bouncing back with a strong performance against Spurs.
The Argentine’s return to fitness has been a big boost for West Ham. While he may not be back to his best yet, his presence in the line-up is unquestionable.
On the left flank, it should be Andre Ayew who could get the nod, ahead of Marko Arnautovic, after the Austrian’s hapless show on Friday.
With Sakho a doubt for the game, Bilic could opt to go with Carroll at the top of the attack, in order to afford some rest to Javier Hernandez.
