Picking the winner of Group E at the moment looks very difficult, as each team is picking up points from each other. It was a game of 2 halves in Germany, as Tottenham controlled the game in the first half but failed to make the most of their dominance. However, after a tactical change at halftime by Bayer Leverkusen boss Roger Schmidt, Leverkusen really had Tottenham against the ropes and should have come away as winners. Mauricio Pochettino will be the happier of the two bosses with a point and will look for his team to improve their performance in the return tie at Wembley in two weeks time.

Match Ratings

Hugo Lloris – 8

The Tottenham keeper was in fantastic form, making 5 or 6 great saves keeping Tottenham in the match in the second half. One in particular, was the miraculous piece of goalkeeping as he foiled Javier Hernandez at close range.

Kieran Trippier – 7

He was an excellent outlet for Tottenham on the right-hand side. Mauricio Pochettino loves his fullbacks to push forward, and in the first half, Trippier did this excellently, putting in numerous crosses into the box, one in particular, Dele Alli was unlucky not to score from.

Jan Vertonghen – 8

Question marks were raised about how Tottenham would cope without Toby Alderweireld, who is arguably the best defender in the Premier League currently. Vertonghen really took on the extra responsibility in the evening as he marshalled the back line superbly.

Eric Dier – 6

Was solid enough when questioned in the second half during long spells of Leverkusen pressure, but played Lloris into trouble a few times and also let the ball bounce when he should have cleared it out. May take him a few matches to get used to playing in the centre of defence again.

Danny Rose -7

Good battling performance from the all action Tottenham left back who at times resembles a bowling ball being thrown up and down the wing given his stocky frame and brave bulldozing nature. When your backs are against the wall, he is one player you can count on.

Victor Wanyama – 7

The signing of Wanyama in the summer raised a few eyebrows as he wasn’t deemed what Tottenham needed, especially after Eric Dier’s great season. However, Wanyama in recent weeks has really made the position his own. As strong as an ox, he broke up play well despite looking a bit outnumbered at times.

Erik Lamela – 4

Poor game by Lamela. He works hard, you can never fault him there, but tonight was one of the nights where he gets the ball stuck under his feet, runs into people, and misplaces passes. An evenings work probably best forgotten for the enigmatic Argentinian.

Christian Eriksen – 5

Neat, tidy, worked hard, but really struggled to find any end product. In the absence of Harry Kane, it is important for him to start scoring.

Dele Alli – 5

A few moments where he showed some ridiculous pieces of skill, and nearly scored when he ghosted into the box with one of his supporting runs reminiscent of Frank Lampard. But along with the rest of the Tottenham attacking midfield, didn’t do enough when they had the ball.

Heung-Min Son – 6

A lot was expected from him on his return to Leverkusen. He was bright in the first half, cutting in off the left flank, but as with the rest of the Tottenham attack, just faded in the second half.

Vincent Janssen – 6

Tonight showed the best and worst of Vincent Janssen, and why he is dividing opinion among Spurs fans already. He is superb at holding off defenders and bringing other into play. He looks like the perfect target man. However, as seen when he hit the cross bar from 6 yards with a great headed chance, his luck is out in front of goal at the moment. He needs to start scoring quickly.

Subs

Mousa Dembele

Didn’t look fit when he come on. Squandered possession.

Moussa Sissoko

Spurs fans are praying that Pochettino can work his magic to prove those Newcastle fans who celebrated his sale was right. But looked like a dog chasing a balloon, again.
