Can Spurs’ Son Heung-min Get Back to His Brilliant Best?

Share

Son Heung-min has chipped away and slowly but surely turned himself into one of the Premier League’s best players. However, like his club side Tottenham Hotspur, Son has struggled to find form this season.

Looking Back on a Sensational 2021-22 Season

Son had an exceptional 2021-22 campaign, netting 24 goals in all competitions. He finished level with Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah in the league and shared the Golden Boot. Before a ball was kicked this term, Son was among the favourites to be the top scorer again at of around 14/1. However, he has struggled to make an impact and is miles off the pace.

23 of Son’s goals in the 2021-22 campaign came in the Premier League. He ended the season in stunning form, scoring six goals in his last five league games, including a brace in the 5-0 final-day victory at Norwich City.

Can Son Rekindle His Scoring Form?

Tottenham was tipped for success this season back in the summer. With Antonio Conte, they have one of the best managers in world football, but the Italian has struggled to get the best out of this talented Spurs squad so far.

For one reason or another, the deadly partnership between Harry Kane and Son has not quite clicked this season. Sure, we have seen glimpses of the world-class duo working in tandem, but the pair have been nowhere near their best this season.

Before jetting off to Qatar for the 2022 FIFA World Cup, Son had netted just three Premier League goals. All three came in the same match, as the South Korea ace scored a 13-minute hat-trick in a 6-2 win over Leicester City in September. As for Kane, he helped himself to 12 league goals pre-World Cup.

Despite his woes in front of the goal, nobody can question Son’s commitment and desire. He has played a huge role in the Spurs’ recent success, and he will no doubt come back stronger once the goals start flowing again.

There is a good reason why the no. 7 has been voted Tottenham Hotspur Player of the Season on three occasions since moving to north London back in 2015.

Spurs Need Son Firing in 2023

Tottenham made a bright start to their season but went off the boil before and after the World Cup break. They now face a real challenge to finish in the top four and secure a UEFA Champions League place for next season.

However, Conte’s side is still going strong in this season’s Champions League. The Londoners scraped their way out of the group to book their place in the knockout phase. They face Italian giants AC Milan over two legs in the Round of 16.

In a hectic 2023 of relentless football action, Spurs need Son to start firing now more than ever. There are some huge games on the horizon for Tottenham, and having Son back among the goals would be a real boost. The 30-year-old is more than capable of getting back to his brilliant best in the blink of an eye.
