Could Cesc Fabregas Replace Coutinho At Liverpool?

Liverpool are certainly a club on the rise in the Premier League. But a lot could hinge on their qualification for the Champions League. In spite of their star player Philippe Coutinho signing a new deal not so long ago, recent reports suggest that Barcelona will come knocking in the summer and if Liverpool fail to finish in the top-4, Coutinho may well be waving goodbye to Anfield this summer, albeit at a hefty price.

Liverpool have been linked with Real Madrid’s Isco, who could be a long-term replacement for the Brazilian playmaker but a new name now on the radar, that could be a quick fix is Chelsea midfielder, Cesc Fabregas.

The Spaniard is close to helping the Blues to their second league title in three years, although he has not had to do as much this season as he did a couple of years ago. He has fallen out of favour at the Stamford Bridge under Antonio Conte and will probably be sold this summer. Liverpool are considering spending on the playmaker but can Fabregas replace Coutinho at Liverpool?

Having lifted the league title with Chelsea and Barcelona, Fabregas does have the winning mentality most players in the current Liverpool lineup lack. At 30, he may not be able to play in all the competitions but he could be the solution to Liverpool’s problems against the smaller teams in the league.

Fabregas seems to have a magic ball up his sleeve in every game. He has 2.76 key passes and 3.52 chances created to his name per 90 minutes played, which is extraordinary, and he will certainly improve Liverpool’s already strong attacking lineup.

He is a midfielder and will not solve their defensive woes but Klopp should not expect this from him anyway. He will be ready to do the dirty work but Fabregas is the player who can break opponents down from a deep position and is a player who the current Liverpool squad deeply miss. Whether or not if he is a replacement for Coutinho is a difficult question to answer.

Coutinho is still growing as a player and will surely turn into a bigger star in the years to come. Losing him will have a huge effect on the squad and it is hard to imagine a 30-year old, even of Fabregas’ calibre filling those shoes.

Klopp is certainly building for the future but if he loses Coutinho this summer, and with no Champions League football, he will find it difficult to lure top transfer targets to Anfield at the end of the season. So, Fabregas could surely be the fix that can take them there at the end of the next season. But in the long term, they will have to look elsewhere if their Brazil magician calls it quits this summer.
