Cahill The Saviour – The Best And The Worst Rated Chelsea Players vs Stoke City

Cahill Goes From Villain To Hero As Chelsea Beat Stoke

Chelsea went thirteen points clear at the top of the Premier League standings as they defeated Mark Hughes’ Stoke City 2-1 at the bet365 Stadium om Saturday evening.

The Blues did not take long to get ahead, as Willian caught Stoke goalkeeper Lee Grant unawares at the near post from a free-kick, just thirteen minutes into the game to give Chelsea the lead. However, parity was returned with seven minutes left for half-time, when Jonathan Walters converted from the penalty spot, after he was fouled by Gary Cahill in the box.

Both teams had their fair share of positive moments in the attacking third. However, the game looked to be heading for a draw, until Cahill decided to make amends for his earlier mistake. The Englishman lashed home from eight-yards out after Potters defender Erik Pieters had a brain-fade moment, when he ended up passing the ball to the Chelsea man in his own box.

Antonio Conte’s men managed to show great grit and determination against a dogged Stoke side and moved another step closer to the Premier League title, that too without their star player Eden Hazard in the line-up. Here’s how the Chelsea players fared on the day:

Chelsea Player Ratings

Thibaut Courtois – 6/10

The Belgian shot-stopper wasn’t called into action much. Showed good footwork and distribution. However, he did not stop the penalty.

Cesar Azpilicueta – 7/10

Another steady and solid performance from the Spanish international. Dealt with Berahino quite easily. Continues to impress.

David Luiz – 6.5/10

Steady at the back. Held things together for Chelsea. Almost caught Grant out from a free-kick fifty yards out.

Gary Cahill – 7/10

Conceded the penalty with a push in the back on Walters, which lead to the equalizer. However, redeemed himself with the winner in the 87th minute.

Victor Moses – 7/10

Shook off an injury to put in a strong shift out on the right wing for the Blues. Was a constant attacking outlet out wide.

N’Golo Kante – 8/10

Another colossal performance from the Frenchman in the centre of the park. Covered every blade of grass, was good in possession and shielded his defence admirably. Brilliant performance once again.

Nemanja Matic – 7/10

Was quietly effective in the middle. With Kante alongside, didn’t really have to do much. Replaced in the 82nd minute.

Marcos Alonso – 8/10

Won the free-kick for the opening goal. Rattled the crossbar with a free-kick in the second half. Was strong going forward.

Willian – 7.5/10

The Brazilian showed great intelligence and presence of mind for his goal from the free-kick. A lively performance out on the right flank.

Diego Costa – 5/10

Booked just 17 minutes into the game for dissent. The Stoke defence targeted him and the Spaniard got wound up too easily.

Pedro – 7/10

With Eden Hazard absent, the Spaniard had to be the creator for Chelsea. Was a real threat with his inventiveness. Came close to scoring a goal.

Substitutes

Cesc Fabregas – 6/10

Came on to replace Victor Moses in the 69th minute. Provided the much needed impetus for Chelsea in the closing stages.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek – N/A

Replaced Matic in the 82nd minute as Conte looked to give him some minutes on the field.

Kurt Zouma – N/A

The defender came on for Willian in the 88th minute with Chelsea looking to protect their lead.
