‘Buy sakho or we’re favourites to go down’ – Crystal Palace Fans React To 3-0 Defeat At The Hands Of Huddersfield+Match Report

Match Report: Crystal Palace 0-3 Huddersfield Town

Crystal Palace began their journey under new manager Frank de Boer, with a humiliating 3-0 loss to Premier League newbies Huddersfield Town, at the Selhurst Park.

De Boer started all of his new signings in the game, with Timothy Fosu-Mensah and Jairo Riedewald completing the three-man defence with Scott Dann. Loanee Ruben Loftus-Cheek started in an advanced midfield role, with Luka Milivojevic and Jason Puncheon completing the central midfield. Joel Ward and Patrick van Aanholt were the wing-backs while Christian Benteke started in the attack along with Wilfried Zaha.

It was the Terriers that carved out the first opening of the game, but Tom Ince fired straight at Wayne Hennessey at goal. There was a good pace to the game as the home team enjoyed a larger share of the possession, but Huddersfield looked dangerous on the counter, every time they were on the ball.

Deservedly, the visitors took the lead in the 23rd minute as Zanka’s header from a corner was deflected into his own net by Ward. They were ahead by two goals three minutes later, with record-signing Steve Mounie rising above his marker to head home, leaving Palace in tatters. They could have gone down to a third goal,# after Ince was allowed through, but Ward made a good recovery tackle.

Palace had the first real chance through Zaha, who fired a low shot at goal, drawing a fine save from Jonas Lossl. Benteke headed over the bar and Zaha was once again denied by a great tackle from Tommy Smith, as half-time approached.

The Eagles made a change at half-time as Andros Townsend came on for Milivojevic, but David Wagner’s men started off brightly again, with Chris Lowe forcing a save from Hennessey, and Mounie firing the rebound high. Palace had two chances in quick succession, but Zaha was denied by a last-ditch tackle from Lowe, before Benteke’s header from a corner was spectacularly saved by Lossl. Palace started to grow into the game, and Zaha continued to cause problems down the left-hand side.

But they could have easily gone down by three, as Mounie was played through on goal, with just Hennessey to beat. But Fosu-Mensah produced a great tackle to deny the Frenchman. With under 15 minutes left, Dann missed a great chance for Palace, as he volleyed high over the bar from a corner. And they were made to pay, as Mounie grabbed his second of the day, slotting home from the edge of the box.

Palace pressed for a late goal, but could not find one as the game reached a halt with Huddersfield announcing themselves in the Premier League with a 3-0 win. De Boer will be very much disappointed with what he saw, especially in the first half. There was more purpose to the Eagles’ play in the second period, but they could not find a way through.
