Burnley would bag the best January addition by signing this Liverpool-born defender to reinforce their backline

Why Scott Dann would be a good addition to Burnley in January

According to a report from The Sun, Burnley are planning to rekindle their interest in Crystal Palace defender Scott Dann in January.

The Clarets wanted to sign Scott Dann on the transfer deadline day but a move didn’t materialise.

The 32-year-old joined Palace from Blackburn Rovers way back in 2013 but he’s slipped down the pecking order after missing much of last season with a serious injury. And with Gary Cahill joining the Eagles on a free transfer, the Liverpool-born defender has further fallen down the pecking order.

At 32, Scott Dann still has a lot to offer at the highest level and Burnley would be right in offering him an escape route from Palace in January.

The Clarets faced all sorts of problems in the Premier League last season, mainly because of their early start due to the Europa League qualifications. Sean Dyche’s side looked almost certain to go down but managed to retain their top-flight status by hook or crook.

After a really poor 2018/19 campaign, Dyche strengthened his squad by making some decent signings over the summer. And his side have started the new season strongly, beating Southampton 3-0 at Turf Moor last weekend.

James Tarkowski and Ben Mee have formed a truly formidable partnership at the back for Burnley but injury or suspension to any one of them could see either of Kevin Long or Ben Gibson come into the starting XI. The Clarets definitely need more depth in the squad and signing Dann will be the right decision.

Dann has solid experience in the Premier League, having played at Selhurst Park for a number of years now. He did miss the majority of last campaign with knee ligament damage but is now fit and raring to prove himself again. The 32-year-old is reliable, decent with the ball at his feet, strong in the air and a huge goal threat from set-pieces.

The former Birmingham City man is a leader on and off the pitch, something which Dyche’s side currently lacks.

Dann can comfortably hit the ground running, thanks to his Premier League experience and Burnley will massively benefit with his addition, both in the Premier League as well as in the cup competitions.

Verdict

Burnley’s need for a new centre-half is overly evident and the necessity will increase hugely if they lose any defender to a long-term injury. Hence, the Clarets need to plan from now onward and Scott Dann would be a fantastic addition in the New Year.
