Burnley capturing this veteran Chelsea star would help them achieve European qualification next season

Burnley opinion: Should the Clarets sign Gary Cahill?

According to a report from the Sun, Burnley are set to offer a lifeline to Chelsea skipper Gary Cahill in the summer. The 33-year-old will be leaving Chelsea at the end of the season, once his contract with the club expires, and he will be available for free in the summer.

Cahill spent the majority of the season away from the starting line up, having played just 22 minutes of Premier League football.

Maurizio Sarri has preferred the likes of David Luiz, Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen over the skipper but he brought Cahill on in the final minute for an emotional send-off.

Cahill will leave the Blues after over 7 years of incredible service to the club, where he won two Premier League titles, as well as the Champions League. However, the veteran still has a lot to give, despite his age and Burnley signing him will be a no brainer.

The Clarets, after an incredible season last year, have had a horrid one this term. Sean Dyche’s side looked destined to go down at one point but they have turned it around and now have a chance to finish 14th in the league.

However, Sean Dyche will have to have a good summer transfer window to avoid another disappointing campaign. A new defender will have to be a priority and Gary Cahill could potentially change the Clarets’ fortunes next season.

The Chelsea skipper will bring in bags of experience to the Burnley squad, having played over 550 senior games for club and country so far. Cahill, when fit, is an outstanding defender who can deal with almost any forward in the world.

The 33-year-old is a real leader who will have his team organised, something that has been lacking with the Clarets this season. Cahill is positionally outstanding and his experience will come in handy for the Clarets in another long and difficult Premier League season.

Summer signing Ben Gibson has been a total failure at Turf Moor and Burnley cannot last the whole season with just James Tarkowski and Ben Mee.

Gary Cahill is undoubtedly an upgrade on all three players and Burnley should sign him in the summer.

Conclusion

Sean Dyche will have one of the best defenders in the Premier League in recent years at his disposal if he manages to sign Gary Cahill in the summer.

Despite being 33 years old, Cahill is still a brilliant defender and he will be of massive help for the Clarets both on and off the pitch. It would certainly help them finish 7th and qualify for Europe next season.
