Brilliant Mendy, Poor Iheanacho – The best and the worst rated Leicester players vs Southampton

Full Time: Southampton 1-2 Leicester City

Harry Maguire scored a stoppage-time winner to give Leicester City a 2-1 victory over Southampton at the St.Mary’s stadium on Saturday.

After an uninspiring first half at St Mary’s, left-back Ryan Bertrand gave Southampton the lead with a thunderbolt from outside the area. Southampton’s lead stood only briefly as Demarai Gray equalised for the visitors, pouncing on a loose ball to fire home from close range.

With 13 minutes remaining, and the game levelled at 1-1, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg was shown a second yellow card for diving in the penalty area. And Leicester made their extra man count as Maguire fired home from 25 yards out to beat goalkeeper Alex McCarthy in the second minute of injury time.

Leicester City player ratings

Kasper Schmeichel – 7/10

Produced two good saves either side of half-time to deny Danny Ings. He was beaten all ends up for Bertrand’s vicious strike.

Kasper Schmeichel

Daniel Amartey – 4/10

Another poor performance from the Ghanaian. Looks like right-back isn’t his perfect position as he continued his uninspiring start to the new season.

Wes Morgan – 6/10

Morgan may have lost the legs but he still remains a reliable presence in the defence. Kept things tight at the back alongside the excellent Maguire.

Harry Maguire – 7/10

What a summer he is having. Maguire was solid at the back barring a couple of worrying moments, but what a wonderful goal he scored to clinch all three points at the death.

Ben Chilwell – 7/10

Chilwell once again put in a promising display at left-back. He was excellent going forward and his wicked deliveries caused the Saints a lot of problems.

Wilfred Ndidi – 5/10

Not a good display by his standards. His passing was not up to the mark and he looked lost at times.

Nampalys Mendy – 8/10

Fantastic display at the heart of Leicester’s midfield. The diminutive Mendy won possession a lot of times and kept his side ticking with his passing abilities.

Ricardo Pereira – 6/10

Pereira tried creating things for his side but to no avail. He was not up to his best as he failed to provide width to his team.

James Maddison – 6/10

Maddison has done well since joining the Foxes in the summer. He showed some good movement off the ball, threaded good passes and was a constant menace. However, he lacked the final ball.

Demarai Gray – 7/10

Gray kept the Southampton defenders on their toes with his pace and unpredictability. And when the chance came, he took it beautifully.

Kelechi Iheanacho – 4/10

A frustrating afternoon for the Nigerian international. Iheanacho toiled throughout the game but lacked service from his teammates.

Substitutes

Marc Albrighton – 5/10

Replaced Iheanacho with 20 minutes to go and added some much-needed spark to Leicester’s attack.

Rachid Ghezzal – 4/10

Came on with barely 10 minutes left and apart from a couple of bright moments, Ghezzal didn’t do much.

Shinji Okazaki – N/A

Good to see Okazaki back from injury but he had very little time to make an impact.
