Man United Player Ratings v Young Boys: Here’s how the Red Devils fared

Manchester United delivered another lacklustre performance but were saved in the last minute.

Marouane Fellaini’s strike in the injury time secured a 1-0 victory over Young Boys at Old Trafford in the Champions League on Tuesday.

Luke Shaw sent a long diagonal into the box which Romelu Lukaku headed into Fellaini’s path. The big Belgian held off Loris Benito before turning to score.

The victory over Young Boys sees Manchester United through to the knockout stages of the Champions League but it was another frustrating night for their fans.

Manchester United Player Ratings

David De Gea – 7/10

A mere spectator in the first half but at 0-0 in the second half, he made an outstanding save off the goal line. One of the best in the business for a reason!

Antonio Valencia – 5/10

Showed good energy down the right but as usual, lacked the end product. Was subbed off due to a minor injury.

Chris Smalling – 6/10

A solid performance from Smalling, who surprisingly looked good with the ball at his feet against Young Boys.

Luke Shaw and Paul Pogba

Phil Jones – 6/10

Made an assured comeback from injury. Put in a good shift alongside Smalling, snuffing out danger when it came into the box.

Luke Shaw – 5/10

Solid but unspectacular from Shaw as the England international offered very little going forward.

Nemanja Matic – 5/10

Booked in the first half. Showed very little signs of improvement from the Palace game.

Marouane Fellaini – 7/10

Kept things ticking by making simple passes. He was ineffective for large parts of the game. He salvaged the night with a stoppage-time.

Fred – 6/10

Played some really crisp passes and looked United’s most creative player in the first half. Tried to create things for his teammates and also got into promising positions. Lacked the cutting edge though.

Jesse Lingard – 4/10

Showed good energy but with very little end product. Subbed off in the second half.

Marcus Rashford – 3/10

Could have given United an early lead but he blazed his shot over the bar. His decision-making was very poor and offered very little going forward.

Anthony Martial

Anthony Martial – 4/10

Martial endured an off-day as nothing worked out for him. Made very little impact in the final third.

Substitutes

Paul Pogba – 4/10

Tried to create things from a deeper role and succeeded to some extent.

Romelu Lukaku – 4/10

Assisted Fellaini for the winner.

Juan Mata – N/A

Made no impact at all.
