The 2019/20 Premier League season is off and running and there’s so much to dissect and what happens in the very first gameweek hardly ever tells the story of the rest of the season.
There are 37 games yet to be played but these were the biggest talking points and will give us an indication of what we can expect for the rest of the season:
Prior to the season starting, there were a lot of discussions regarding West Ham United, Leicester City, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Everton being able to disrupt the status quo.
Those discussions will be calmed down now after West Ham suffered a heavy defeat at home to Champions Manchester City. Everton looked tepid against a weakened Crystal Palace side at Selhurst Park.
Leicester and Wolves played out a goalless draw which suggests that these sides will still have trouble breaking teams in the bottom half despite their performances against the bigger sides.
Both, Liverpool and Manchester City, who were only separated by a single point blitz their way to their respective games.
City put 5 past West Ham despite a difficult first half and Liverpool punished Norwich’s naivety by putting 4 past them in the first half. Klopp and Guardiola still have a lot to play for and it shows.
Sheffield United, Norwich City and Aston Villa will be taking a lot of encouragement from their performances in the weekend. The Blades drew away from home at the Vitality, thanks to a late goal from Billy Sharp and were impressive throughout.
Norwich took more shots from open play than anyone did at Anfield the whole of last season and Villa looked the better side against Spurs for the first 70 minutes before Christian Eriksen came off the bench to change the tide of the game.
If they continue playing with no fear, they could stay up but they’ll definitely be a fun watch.
After years of dull and dour football under Louis Van Gaal and Jose Mourinho, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer seems to be heading in the right direction. They won’t be title contenders and top-four isn’t guaranteed but you can guarantee a lot of goals either way.
They were devastating on the counter-attack and have a solid back-five including the goalkeeper, which will save them a lot of points.
Not a lot of people would’ve thought twice if you told them Brighton were likely to get relegated but Graham Potter’s side were very impressive against Watford, giving them a convincing 3-0 beating.
Graham Potter has brought in a more attractive style of football and they can look forward to a very exciting season.
