Why Brighton should sign Chelsea outcast Danny Drinkwater

According to a report in the Sun, Chelsea’s Danny Drinkwater has been linked with a loan move to Graham Potters’ Brighton and Hove Albion.

Drinkwater was one of the heroes of the Leicester City side that won the Premier League title in the 2015/16 season and moved to Chelsea under Antonio Conte in the 2017/18 season. However, he has hardly appeared for the Blues since his move.

The transfer itself seemed a little bizarre at the time but it’s time Chelsea tried to offload him. The Seagulls could really use someone with the former Manchester United academy graduate’s skillset.

Drinkwater is an able passer of the ball from deep and usually holds his defensive position. He has a fantastic long-range pass, which was often the catalyst for much of Leicester City’s counter-attacks during their title-winning run. He’s still only 29 years old and has never depended much on mobility, with his positioning doing most of the work for him.

Brighton have played Dale Stephens in the holding midfield role in the last two seasons but Drinkwater would definitely be a massive improvement on him with his more adventurous range of passing.

Drinkwater is unlikely to be in new Chelsea boss Frank Lampard’s plans as Lampard has shown a preference for youth during the pre-season friendlies. Drinkwater still has a lot of football left in him and he’d be a valuable asset to Graham Potters’ side.

Potter is arriving on the back of an impressive campaign with Swansea, where his style of attacking football received rave reviews and he’s been brought to the Amex Stadium with the hope of seeing more of the same.

Brighton have some very exciting talent in Yves Bissouma and Alireza Jahanbakhsh, who struggled last season and it could be the case that a pragmatic manager like Chris Hughton could not use them to their full effect. However, there’s every chance that Graham Potter will be able to use them better.

Conclusion

Adding Drinkwater to this young and exciting side would give them some much-needed balance and allow Potter to get his philosophy embedded into the team. Brighton will be hoping to do more than just survive this season, and play some exciting football along the way.
