Why Brentford have struck gold with a new deal for Luka Racic

According to BBC, Brentford starlet Luka Racic has put pen to paper on a new four-year contract which should keep him at Griffin Park until at least 2023.

The 20-year-old centre-back was out of contract next summer but the Bees moved quickly to secure his long-term future with a brand new deal following his official promotion as a member of the first-team squad.

Born in Denmark to parents of Montenegrin descent, Luka Racic rose through the youth system at Copenhagen before joining the ‘B’ team of Championship outfit Brentford last summer.

As a result of his rapid progress in the club’s ‘B’ team, Racic was called up to the senior ranks for an FA Cup third-round tie against Oxford United in January before the youngster was eventually handed his professional debut against Millwall in the previous campaign.

Having made his first start for Brentford against Preston North End on the final day of the 2018-19 season, Racic was officially promoted to the first-team along with fellow youngsters Jan Zamburek and Patrik Gunnarsson after impressing manager Thomas Frank in the pre-season fixtures heading into the ongoing campaign.

The Danish starlet featured as a substitute against Middlesbrough earlier in the season and also started against Hull City, Cambridge United and Charlton Athletic before an injury damned the 20-year-old to a spell on the sidelines and stalled his progress in what looked like the start of an impressive breakthrough season in the Championship.

As per the report, Thomas Frank has showered praises on Racic as a clever and aggressive defender with good technical abilities on the ball and the youngster, indeed, showed exactly why he is held in such high regard at Griffin Park with some confident displays at the back in August before picking up an injury.

The up and coming central defender is yet to earn his senior international debut for Denmark but he has featured for his nation across various age-group levels from U-16 to U-20, accumulating a total of 27 caps in the process.

To put things into perspective, Luka Racic has already shown that he has the talent and the potential to make a big impact at Griffin Park in the years to come and Brentford have definitely taken a step in the right direction by offering him fresh terms until 2023.

In Pontus Jansson, Julian Jeanvier and Henrik Dalsgaard, the Bees have some accomplished international defenders in their ranks but keeping hold of a bright emerging prospect like Luka Racic was always going to be important for their long-term plans moving forward, particularly with the youngster illustrating serious potential early in his career.

Along with manager Thomas Frank, fellow defender Henrik Dalsgaard, midfielder Mathias Jensen and youngster Emiliano Marcondes, Racic is a part of a strong Danish contingent at the club and it is something that should work wonders for his development, as he continues to recover from his injury.

Verdict

Marcus Forss, who is currently out on loan at Wimbledon, former Liverpool winger Sergio Canos and Gunnarsson all signed new deals earlier in the season and Racic’s latest extension is yet another move that perfectly outlines the club’s ideology of blooding unknown young players and polishing them into future stars.

All in all, Brentford have struck gold with a new deal for the Danish youth international and this looks like a move that could go on to pay rich dividends moving forward.
