Boxing Day Controversy at Old Trafford

Manchester United ended Boxing Day on a winning note with a 4-3 conquer over Newcastle United at Old Trafford. The game was filled with stunning displays from both sides accompanied by the occasional whistle to stop play for fouls committed here and there.

But one particular instant of the match caught everyone’s attention, which was the own goal conceded by Jonny Evans. After scoring for the Red Devils, Manchester United defender Jonny Evans found himself in his own territory, netting a goal for the Magpies from a cross by former United player Danny Simpson. This prompted Evans to turn his face from the crowd, when circumstantially; the linesman raised his flag for an offside against Cisse. It is believed that he was unaware of Evans to even have touched the ball. A minute later, soon after consulting with the referee Mike Dean and his assistant,  who ruled out his linesman’s decision, gave the goal in favor of Newcastle United.

Later, the crowd saw United players running up to the referee to argue against the goal. Commentators were of the lines that which ever way the referee went in favor of, there was bound to be resistance from the other side. Sir Alex was furious after how the first half had passed. If the goal was given the minute the ball found the net, there would be no argument from either side. Fact is that it was an own goal and Newcastle deserved it whatsoever.
