Bournemouth opinion: Should the Cherries sign Jiri Pavlenka

Asmir Begovic has been forced to hand over his reins to 39-year-old Artur Boruc after a string of poor performances. The Pole started off really well, keeping back to back clean sheets against West Ham and Chelsea but has since conceded 12 goals in 5 games.

Boruc is out of contract in the summer and considering his age, he shouldn’t be given an extension by Bournemouth. A replacement goalkeeper in the summer is an absolute necessity for the Cherries this summer and Eddie Howe should consider Werder Bremen’s Jiri Pavlenka.

Pavlenka is Petr Cech’s heir in the Czech national team and has been a vital part for both club and country over the last few years. The 26-year old moved to Werder Bremen in 2017 from Czech side Slavia Prague and has since played 66 times for the Die Werderaner.

A giant at 6ft 5in, Pavlenka is an outstanding shot-stopper and is only 5 saves away from making the second most saves in the league this season.

Pavlenka has been one of the main reasons why Werder Bremen are at 8th place right now and has made a number of match-winning saves this season.

Despite his humungous frame, Pavlenka is incredibly quick off the line to intercept a loose touch. The 26-year-old is one of the best shot-stoppers in the league and his reflexes to deny attempts from close range are incredible.

Pavlenka’s height makes it incredibly easy to catch balls that come into the box and rarely ever misses his punches. The Czech international is also a good passer and boasts of over 73% pass accuracy, a brilliant number for a team that doesn’t usually play out from the back.

Pavlenka is also brilliant at set-pieces and has saved 5 penalties so far this campaign. The 26-year old’s positioning between the sticks is brilliant and this along with his ability to reach either post makes him a wonderful addition to any team and Werder Bremen are fortunate to have him in goal.

Conclusion

Bournemouth’s need for an experienced goalkeeper is evident and Eddie Howe has to address that area in the summer. The Cherries will be making their best signing in recent years if they manage to pull off a deal for Jiri Pavlenka.

Bournemouth, of course, will have to convince the Czech international to make the switch to a relatively smaller team but if they manage to do that, they will have a real star on their hands who would help them reach their ambitions of a top half finish next season.
