Bournemouth opinion: Howe should sign Burnley star Nick Pope
The Lancashire Live has reported that Bournemouth
A number of players in their team are either ageing or past the age of 30, which is why they need new additions.
The Cherries spent well last summer, bringing in David Brooks, Jefferson Lerma and Diego Rico, before adding Chris Mepham and Dominic Solanke in the winter. All five have adjusted well to the side, with both Brooks and Lerma flourishing in the Premier League.
Things will improve for Bournemouth and they have the ability to punch above their weight but not without a younger and better goalkeeper.
That’s exactly what Nick Pope is. Younger than either Asmir Begovic or Artur Boruc, the 26-year-old Burnley star has struggled this season. Injuries to his shoulder have seen Pope miss a large majority of the season, with the Burnley man yet to make his Premier League appearance this season.
He has, however, made appearances in the Europa League and the FA Cup but has lost his place to Tom Heaton with Sean Dyche preferring the 32-year-old even after Pope’s return.
For Bournemouth however, Pope would be an upgrade over their current options, with Begovic out of favour (Sky Sports and Sun) and Boruc being far too old to play regular first-team football.
While the Polish international has done relatively well, he is 39 years old and isn’t getting younger, which means that time will eventually catch up to him. Pope, on the other hand, is a fantastic goalkeeper and it was on show last season.
With Burnley having an incredible season, it wouldn’t have been possible without Pope in goal. Tall and agile, the 26-year-old could do no wrong in the Premier League.
He played so well that the Burnley star rightfully earned a place in Gareth Southgate’s final squad for the 2018 World Cup. However, Pope dislocated his shoulder during Burnley’s Europa League qualifying clash and that was that.
