Bournemouth can solve a key problem in their squad if they sign this experienced Liverpool outcast – Howe has to do it

Bournemouth opinion: Why Bournemouth should make a move for Simon Mignolet

The Sun has reported that Bournemouth have made Liverpool outcast Simon Mignolet among their top goalkeeping targets next summer. Eddie Howe and his men are looking for new goalkeepers and believe that the Belgian is their man.

The reports further indicated that he is not their only target, with the club also looking at Jack Butland and Nick Pope. More than anything, the Cherries need a new goalkeeper given their dependence on Artur Boruc and Asmir Begovic for a large part of this season.

While Begovic is 31 years old, Boruc is 39 and is close to retirement, which means they need a replacement. The Bosnian has been very unreliable this season, with just 5 clean sheets to his name.

This is after having played over 20 games in the season, missing nine games after a reported bust up with manager Eddie Howe (Sky Sports).

It was then that the club switched from Begovic to 39-year-old Boruc, and Bournemouth proceeded to lose four of their next nine games. This is proof that the club needs a new goalkeeper. Simon Mignolet is as good as they come for a mid-table side that is aiming to punch above its weight.

The Belgian has managed to play in over 200 games for Liverpool. This season he’s struggled, but before that, the 31-year-old was a consistent presence for the Reds, ever since his arrival in the summer of 2013.

Furthermore, Mignolet has 245 appearances in the Premier League, playing for both Sunderland and Liverpool. It shows just how talented he was once considered to be.

Mignolet has been playing second fiddle to an impeccable Alisson Becker this season. It’s clear that the time has come for him to move on and given Bournemouth’s desperation to add a more reliable pair of hands between the sticks, it’s a move that will do both sides a lot of good.

Conclusion

The Cherries need someone else to take over the reins from Artur Boruc so that the 39-year-old can finally retire. Simon Mignolet isn’t the best goalkeeper in the world but for Bournemouth, that shouldn’t really matter..
