“Bottling is not an option”, “Don’t let the goal fool you”: Some Leeds fans react to thrilling 1-1 draw vs Middlesbrough + Match report

Middlesbrough 1-1 Leeds United: Phillips saves the day for the Whites

Leeds United returned to top of the table after playing out a 1-1 draw with Middlesbrough at Teesside, with Kalvin Phillips scoring the equaliser in the 101st minute. Lewis Wing gave the home side a lead, but Phillips levelled things up with virtually the last meaningful kick of the game.

Boro were certain to come back to winning ways after being shocked in the midweek by Newport County. Two minutes after half-time, Wing did well to get his shot away from 12 yards out, and it had enough to beat Kiko Casilla.

Marcelo Bielsa’s men had possession but weren’t able to muster much on target. Kemar Roofe was denied with twice by Darren Randolph, who made two very good saves. Pontus Jansson glanced his header at the cross-bar and Patrick Bamford couldn’t follow it up.

Play was held up late in the second half when Jack Clarke got seriously injured. Doctors took time while attending the youngster as they wanted to make sure of many things. Clarke was unwell and got stretched off receiving oxygen.

As a result of that stoppage, we had 12 minutes of added time after the 90th minute. In the 11th minute of stoppage time, Liam Cooper’s flick fell into the path of Phillips, who headed the ball past Randolph to salvage an improbable point.

At the end of the day, it was a point gained for Leeds, who will await Norwich’s result tomorrow to know whether they will finish the weekend on top or not.
