Why This Blockbuster Striker To Arsenal Would Be A Match Made In Heaven

Sergio Aguero is one of the hottest strikers in world football and has displayed remarkable consistency for Man City over the years. He has been their talisman and helped them end their 44-year wait for the league title. He has been solid and has won two titles already with the club, with City slowly but steadily trying to prove a point to their local rivals, Manchester united.

Aguero was a youth product of Independiente, where he joined as a 9-year old and stayed with them until 2005/06 season, before moving to Atletico Madrid in 2006.

Aguero was always consistent in scoring goals and it was evident during his time at Independiente and Atletico Madrid. He scored 23 goals in 56 appearances in Argentina and a whopping 101 goals in 234 appearances during his stay in Spain.

Manchester City did well to lure Aguero away from Atletico Madrid in 2011, amidst heavy competition from other European clubs for the striker’s signature. The move was a dream one. Aguero scored a total of 30 goals in 2011/12 season, which was his first in England. He scored 23 goals in the league and scored the final goal of Manchester City’s season that saw them lift the league title after a 44-year wait. The stage was set for a new era, and that has been the case after all these years.

When Pep Guardiola arrived at Man City, it was expected that Aguero and Guardiola were going to form a historic partnership. Instead, it hasn’t turned out that way and Aguero has often found himself on the bench. Iheanacho has been given his fair share of chances and Gabriel Jesus’ arrival has only worsened Aguero’s case.

With him struggling for game time, and a certain club from North London failing to launch a strong bid for the title, would it be a match made in heaven if the Sergio moved from Man City to Arsenal? It certainly might be.

Arsenal have always been lacking the X-factor required to stay on top. They usually start the season well, stay on top till 12 games, then struggle in November, December and January and then pick up the form from February and manage to attain a top four finish. This has been the same story every year. In the 2011/12 season, when Aguero scored 30 goals in all competitions, Arsenal’s Robin Van Persie scored a whopping 37 goals in 48 games. Usually, that kind of goal scoring form of a team’s striker is enough to drag the team past the line, but miraculously, in Arsenal’s case, it was different. Van Persie moved to Manchester United the following season. It has been a rebuilding process for Arsene Wenger ever since and he has managed to fill up all the departments with quality players. The arrival of Ozil, Sanchez, and Cech changed the way Arsenal approached the transfer windows. But after all this, it still remains that Arsenal lack something to win the league title that has been eluding them since 2004.

Arsenal’s style of play has changed after Sanchez was deployed as a Centre Forward. They look more agile, fluid and are able to exploit spaces with ease. They are now able to press high up the pitch and force the opposition centre-halves into errors. Despite the change, Arsenal still miss a world class striker up front. Theo Walcott was in fine form until December, but injury break has hampered his goal scoring progress.

Summer signing Lucas Perez has mostly been played on the wings and has performed extremely well for a player who is new to the country and is given less playing time. Alex Iwobi has been the regular starter for the Gunners on the left flank and is a really impressive young lad. However, he still needs to keep a cool head in front of goal when he gets his chances. The signs are extremely good for the young Nigerian. But the point remains that if Arsenal are to win the title again, it has to be a partnership between three players and not just two.

In recent times, every club that has managed to win the league title has had three players combining to deliver. The likes of Barcelona, Real Madrid, and Bayern Munich all have a trio to fire. Barcelona have Messi, Suarez, and Neymar; Real Madrid have Benzema, Bale, and Ronaldo; And Bayern Munich have Robben, Muller, and Lewandowski. Right now Arsenal have world class talent in the form of Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil. Ozil, in particular, can have a  better impact on the pitch if he has a world class striker making runs for his through balls. His passing and vision are second to none. Alexis, on the other hand, is a beast and can do everything on the pitch; he runs all game, can score, can pass and can also carry the team on his shoulders when needed. Despite these two genuine superstars, it is clear Arsenal need a third man, and it could be Sergio Aguero.

The blockbuster star from Argentina is only still 28 years old and has plenty of football left in him. His experience in the Premier League makes him an instant fix. The style of play Arsenal have opted after deploying Alexis as striker suits Sergio Aguero best.

If the Argentine arrives at Arsenal, he will perfectly suit the fluid style of play at Arsenal, with Alexis on the left, Aguero as the central striker and Ozil being the supplier. The pressure also eases on Theo Walcott, who is not known to be a consistent performer.

Simply put, Aguero’s arrival divides the pressure on two players among three. If it does happen, then it will finally be Arsene Wenger’s season after a long time.
