Sheffield United opinion: Blades to offer a deal to Valencia – Good move?

According to a report in Star (h/t Daily Mail), Premier League’s new boys Sheffield United have offered a shock deal to former Manchester United full-back Antonio Valencia for a possible move during this transfer window.

The Ecuadorian, who made 339 appearances for the Red Devils and also captained them lately, was released when his contract expired this summer.

Hence, the Blades are looking to make a swoop for him on a free transfer, with just wages to agree with (h/t Star). However, they would face competition from other clubs who are also interested in the 33-year-old. (h/t Star)

Manager Chris Wilder has been keen on bolstering the squad ahead of the new adventure in the Premier League. Sheffield United have also been linked with former Bayern Munich legend Frank Ribery, which just goes to show the ambitions of the club. (h/t Star)

Here’s why they should first look to seal the move of Valencia soon:

Blades could do with Valencia’s experience

After starting his Manchester United career as a winger, Antonio Valencia became a regular starter at right-back for the last few years. He is one of those full-backs who is more comfortable making runs forward rather than just sitting back with the centre-backs.

Hence, in a way, if the 33-year-old manages to play in a system where a wing-back is required, it would be perfect for him. The Ecuador international can focus on making runs forward on a regular basis, knowing that there are three centre-backs on the patrol at the back.

In Chris Wilder’s 3-5-2 or 3-5-1-1 system, this is exactly what happens. For that reason, Sheffield United are right in making a move for the former Manchester United star.

Furthermore, even if George Baldock stays despite rumours of his future (h/t Football Scotland), the Blades could do with an experienced option in as a backup.

Conclusion

All in all, Chris Wilder’s men would get a quality player with experience if they manage to seal the swoop of Antonio Valencia.
