Manchester City vs Schalke report: Manchester City match report

Manchester City moved to the quarter-finals of the Champions League after a comfortable 7-0 victory over Schalke on the night, with a 10-2 aggregate.

City, as expected maintained the early possession but failed get past Schalke’s defence in the first 10 minutes. However, Sterling was
brilliantly set through on the right flank but his cross was missed by Aguero.

Pep Guardiola’s side continued to dominate the possession but found it difficult to get through a very compact Schalke defence.

City opened the scoring in the 35th minute after a foul on Bernardo Silva was deemed to be a penalty by the referee. Aguero calmly chipped it over Fahrmann to give the hosts a 2-goal cushion on aggregate.

The Argentine didn’t take long to make another impact after he buried a back heel from Raheem Sterling past Fahrmann. The goal was finally awarded after a lengthy review by the VAR. Pep Guardiola’s side were cruising at this point.

The onslaught didn’t stop there as Leroy Sane made it three for the hosts three minutes before half-time. Schalke were well and truly down at the break.

The first chance of the second half fell to Leroy Sane, whose left-footed shot went wide. The German was at it once again a couple of minutes later as he went around Ralph Fahrmann to score but the goal was correctly adjudged offside.

Sane’s relentless effort continued as he picked out a brilliant cross to find Raheem Sterling, who finished to give City a 4-goal lead. The goal was initially called offside but VAR ruled the goal in Sterling’s favour.

With the game in the bag, Guardiola brought on Phil Foden and Gabriel Jesus in place of skipper David Silva and Sergio Aguero.

Sane picked up another assist against his old club as Bernardo Silva finished his cross to make it 5-0 for the English champions. Fabian Delph came on for the last 20 minutes as Aymeric Laporte was withdrawn.

Sane continued to add to his assist tally as he set up Phil Foden who made it 6-0 with 12 minutes left to play. Foden had another chance almost immediately but his shot was blocked by Fahrmann.

Gabriel Jesus was the next player to get in on the act as Fahrmann failed to stop his shot from the edge of the box. The Brazilian’s goal made it 7-0 to the hosts as they convincingly qualified for the next stage of the Champions League.
