Why Hull City shouldn’t hesitate to part ways with David Milinkovic

According to Hull Live, Hull City winger David Milinkovic has been deemed surplus to requirements at the KCOM Stadium, with manager Grant McCann making it clear that the 25-year-old doesn’t feature in his plans moving ahead in the campaign. 

The Tigers are prepared to get the French-Serbian star off their books as soon as possible, with McCann looking to trim his squad before Monday’s continental transfer deadline.

Milinkovic, who is yet to feature for Hull City in the Championship this term, was omitted from the 18-man squad in the penalty-shootout defeat away at Preston North End in the Carabao Cup and the manager has revealed that the player, too, wants to resurrect his career away from East Yorkshire.

Born in France to parents of Serbian descent, Milinkovic started his career in the youth ranks of Serbian heavyweights Red Star Belgrade and spent time with Rad and BASK Beograd in the nation of his heritage before making a move to Italy with Serie B club Ternana. 

The 25-year-old earned a surprise move to the top-flight with Genoa in 2016, although he never made it to the first-team there and spent time on loan at Foggia and Messia in the lower divisions, as well as Hearts in the Scottish Premiership.

Despite registering lacklustre numbers on his loan spells, the winger earned the biggest breakthrough in his career last summer when Hull City came calling for his services.

However, after failing to make much of an impression in the Championship, the French-Serbian attacking currently finds himself on the verge of an untimely exit from the KCOM Stadium,    

Milinkovic, who scored his first goal for the Tigers in the 3-0 win against Tranmere in the EFL Cup this season, made only 11 appearances under former manager Nigel Adkins in the previous campaign, whilst being an unused substitute in a lot of other fixtures. 

As well as his struggles to nail down a regular starting role, Milinkovic has also earned negative reviews from the coaching staff in East Yorkshire for his lack of commitment and poor time-keeping in training. 

Hence, it doesn’t require a rocket scientist to figure out that the 25-year-old hasn’t had the best of times at Hull, both on and off the pitch, and it is hardly a surprise to see him way down the pecking order under McCann, simply because there are more deserving players to stake a claim for a place in the team. 

To put things into perspective, it is crystal clear that the out-of-favour winger doesn’t have a future at Hull City and the Tigers should make it a point to sort out the problem before the deadline, given that it would make no sense whatsoever for them to pay him wages for doing next to nothing. 

Influential Polish veteran Kamil Grosicki continues to be City’s first-choice wide player down the left and Milinkovic’s departure would leave the manager with Josh Magennis and teenager Keane Lewis-Potter as viable alternatives in that position.

Agreed, neither of them has done an awful lot but Milinkovic, too, has been quite frustrating over the course of his year-long stay in East Yorkshire and it is high time for the Tigers to put an end to such mediocrity. 

That said, the Tigers should not hesitate to offload the underperforming winger before the deadline.
