Beat Coventry City and more – Here are 3 things Watford must do in the coming weeks to change their fortunes for the better

Watford opinion: 3 things Watford need to do to change their fortunes

Watford are the only side in the Premier League who are yet to get a point from their 3 first games. This will be a worrying sign for manager Javi Gracia, as his side collapsed during the end of the last term and that seems to have carried forward to this season as well.

Watford, in the past, have been ruthless with managers but Gracia has some credit in the bank after securing their highest finish since the Premier League started. He also took them to an FA Cup final.

Here are 3 things the Watford boss needs to do to change their fortunes around:

Beat Coventry City in the Carabao cup

Despite their struggles in recent weeks, Watford still have a squad of players that are far superior to Coventry City.

Even if it means picking his strongest team, it’s important for Gracia to get a victory in the Carabao cup second round and with his cup record being fairly good, a home victory will bring back the belief.

Javi Gracia

Become more clinical in front of the goal

The Hornets have a wealth of options going forward, ranging from the likes of Andre Gray, Gerard Deulofeu, Danny Welbeck, Isaac Success, Will Hughes to Roberto Pereyra.

Despite missing their inspirational leader Troy Deeney to injury, that’s enough firepower to score goals. In the game against West Ham, they took 23 shots but could only find the back of the net once and need to keep their composure when they’re on the ascendency.

Furthermore, Gracia needs to instil some calmness into his side when Deeney isn’t on the field.

Get Abdoulaye Doucoure to perform at his best again

Doucoure’s form has been crucial to the way Watford perform over the last two seasons.

A case can be made that he’s been one of the best box-to-box midfielders in the league over the last two seasons but he has started this season poorly by conceding an own goal and a penalty in their two home games.

Doucoure needs to find his feet again and may even have to be dropped for a game before he’s back to his usual self.
