Premier League opinion: Ben Chilwell vs Lucas Digne stats comparison

The 2018/19 Premier League season has witnessed one of the rare occasions where defenders have stolen the spotlight from the usual attackers. The likes of Virgil van Dijk, Aaron wan-Bissaka and Victor Lindelof among others have all had incredible seasons, playing massive parts in their clubs’ fates.

Two players who have been the shining light for their clubs are Ben Chilwell and Lucas Digne.

Chilwell’s performances this season have caught the attention of a number of big clubs, including Manchester City, who have been constantly linked with a summer move.

Digne has arguably been Everton’s best player all season and has cemented the left-back spot for himself ahead of club legend Leighton Baines.

The battle for a spot in the team of the season is well and truly on for the two left-backs but how has the duo fared statistically? Let’s find out.

Defensively:

The summer signing from Barcelona, Lucas Digne has averaged 1.9 tackles, 1.7 interceptions and 2.5 clearances per game so far this season. The Frenchman is rarely ever dribbled past, averaging just 0.4 per game and has been decent in aerial duels, having won an average of 2.5 per game. (WhoScored)

Chilwell, on the other hand, has averaged 1.3 tackles, 1.1 interceptions and has been dribbled past 0.9 times per game, all worse than Digne’s numbers.

The Englishman, however, beats the former PSG man when it comes to clearances and aerial duels, averaging 3.4 and 3.2 per game respectively. (WhoScored)

Verdict: Lucas Digne

Offensively:

Digne has scored 3 goals and has provided 4 assists so far in an impressive debut campaign with the Toffees. He has averaged 0.9 shots at goal, 2 key passes, 2.3 crosses, 1.6 long balls with an overall passing accuracy of over 75%. (WhoScored)

Chilwell is again beaten by the Frenchman, having failed to score so far and providing 2 fewer assists than his counterpart. The Leicester City star’s stats of shots, key passes, crosses, long balls and passing accuracy are lesser than Digne, who beats him all ends up. (WhoScored)

Verdict: Lucas Digne

Conclusion

Despite Ben Chilwell receiving all the plaudits by the media, Everton’s Lucas Digne has been highly underrated. The Frenchman has proven why Barcelona swooped in for him a few years ago and his numbers blow Chilwell’s out of the water, despite this being his first season in the Premier League.
