Barcelona opinion: Should Barca sign Dani Olmo?

According to a report from Marca, Barcelona are considering a move for  Diano Zagreb winger Dani Olmo.

The 21-year-old was once an academy product of the Blaugrana before he opted to make a move to Croatia. Now the Catalans are keen on bringing Olmo, who has a contract with the Croatian outfit until 2021.

Olmo’s staggering rise at Dinamo Zagreb

The Spanish U-21 star has been acting as a catalyst for Dinamo Zagreb in the past two seasons, bagging a total of 21 goals and 15 assists in all competitions. Furthermore, he won back-to-back best player of the season awards, with seven major domestic honours.

He is now enjoying a great run in European U-21 Championship. Though he is traditionally deployed as a winger on the left flank and as an attacking midfielder, Olmo is more of a versatile forward.

Coutinho’s exit on the cards

One of the notable things that Barca witnessed in their eventful campaign was Philippe Coutinho toppled from his prime.

The ex-Liverpool man has failed to meet the overwhelming demands and was put under constant pressure throughout the campaign. In addition, his injury woes further dampened his presence and he has been dubbed by many as a flop at Barca.

The Brazilian, who looks a revamped figure at the Copa America has revealed that his chances of playing in La Liga are very bleak.

This could open the door for Dinamo Zagreb’s Olmo, who is looking in great form. He has the archetype of a typical Spanish forward mixed with skills and pace. He will embrace the playing style of Ernesto Valverde in no time.

His addition will also tend to have a great competition with Ousmane Dembele, another highly-talented forward, who failed to make his mark owing to constant injury struggles.

Verdict

Instead of going all out for big money signings, the La Liga champions should stick to their style, which is building a squad around young talent. Signing Dani Olmo would be a step towards that.
