Barcelona letting go of their 25-year-old star would weaken a key position next season – Valverde shouldn’t do this

Barcelona opinion: Should the Blaugrana let go of Nelson Semedo?

Barcelona defender Nelson Semedo is eyeing for a summer exit after failing to find himself as an assured starter under Ernesto Valverde. The Spanish manager often preferred Sergi Roberto over the Portuguese throughout this campaign.

In fact, the former Benfica man has made only 26 appearances in the recently concluded La Liga season, where he came as a substitute for 11 games. Atletico Madrid look the likely suitors for the Portuguese starlet.

Why should Barca hold on to Semedo?

The Catalan giants might have ended their season with a League title but they had a great chance of winning a  treble.

One of the key drawbacks of Valverde’s playing 11 was the lack of counter pressing and the inconsistencies in the attacking players, barring Lionel Messi.

The Spanish international Roberto is one of the hardest working players, with Valverde often switching his position between full-back and midfield.  However, the 27-year-old still failed to deliver his best in big games despite a decent eight-goal tally.

On the other hand, Semedo showcased a glimpse of his talents even with limited opportunities. He was brilliant during the Copa del Rey clash against arch-rivals Real Madrid.

And Semedo also showed Barca that he can form a great partnership with Malcolm, Ousmane Dembele and Lionel Messi, the factor which was completely absent with Roberto.

And the former Benfica starlet possesses tremendous pace down the flank with an eye for sharp crosses. His dribbling skills, ball-control and desire to take part in the attacking third are some of the key attributes which make him a complete full-back.

Conclusion

The Blaugrana are looking to bolster their current squad after missing out on a well-deserved treble. While Valverde looks likely to continue as the manager for the next season, he should give Semedo a chance to continue at Camp Nou.
