Barcelona are doing the right thing by betting on this 19-year-old ace amidst de Ligt transfer blow- Agreed?

Barcelona Opinion: Should Barca rely on Todibo?

According to a report from Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona have decided to bet on French defender Jean-Clair Todibo instead of going all out for other centre-backs.

The Catalans were dealt with a blow as their long-term target Matthijs de Ligt finally chose to play in the Serie A alongside Cristiano Ronaldo at Juventus. (h/t The Telegraph)

Now, they have decided to make the most out of the available options, especially with French defender Todidbo, who the Catalans bought from Toulouse earlier this year.

Is Todibo the heir to Gerrard Pique?

One of the most decorated centre-backs of his generation, Gerard Pique continues to be an integral part of the Catalans. He endured a stellar last season despite being 32.

Partnering with Clement Lenglet in Valverde’s high-line defence, the Spaniard pulled off some eye-catching displays, which looked as if he were in his mid-20’s.

However, with Pique nearing his twilight, it is obvious that the Catalans need to look for his long-term replacement and now, they have Todibo on the table.

The French U20 international was able to catch everyone’s attention when he appeared for his only match of the season against Huesca, eventually bagging the Man of the Match award.

Todibo broke into Toulouse’s main team last summer and played only a few matches before he made his move to Nou Camp.

In the process, the 19-year-old garnered impressive stats with an average of  2.1 tackles, 1.4 interceptions and 6.2 clearances inside just 10 games. Now, it makes sense as to why the Blaugrana signed him in the first place.

Considering his young age and abilities, Todibo is poised for a great future and he can fill Pique’s void once he hangs up his boots.

Final Verdict

The Catalans’ bench strength in terms of the defence might look bleak, as they have only injury-prone Samuel Umtiti besides Lenglet, Pique and Todibo.

While it remains to be seen whether the Catalans are willing to add on reinforcements, they can make better use of Todibo.
