Liverpool v Watford Report: Liverpool Match report
Liverpool kept themselves in charge of their own destiny in this title race with a commanding 5-0 win over Watford at a bouncing Anfield under lights. Sadio Mane, Virgil van Dijk and Divock Origi were the scorers for the Reds, with two of them netting braces against a rather shocked Hornets defence.
The home side began the game at high speed and took the lead in the ninth minute when Trent Alexander-Arnold got some space to get the ball out of his feet and deliver an absolute peach of a cross for Mane to head it into the back of the net.
The Senegalese star was playing as a centre-forward with Roberto Firmino out, and his movement for the opening goal was superb. He doubled his and the team’s tally when Trent fed him in with another lovely cross.
This time, his first touch was awful but he managed to improvise a back-heel finish to beat Foster in the 20th minute.
Watford tried to create one or two chances before half-time, but Fabinho was having a great game to shut out their main threat, Gerard Deulofeu.
21 minutes into the second half, Divock Origi, who was playing on the left wing, cut inside and struck a powerful shot towards the near post with Foster having no chance to save that.
Liverpool scored their fourth and fifth goal through Virgil van Dijk, first one coming from a delicious delivery by Alexander-Arnold, while the second came from a dangerous cross by Andy Robertson.
Reds goalkeeper Alisson had another clean sheet and he earned it by making one point-blank save from Andre Gray.
At the end of the day, it was a rampant win for Jurgen Klopp’s men, who stayed one point ahead of Manchester City with 10 games to go.
Here’s how their fans reacted after the game:
