Austin and Ings to lead the line – Strongest 4-4-2 Southampton XI to face Everton

Predicted Southampton XI to face Everton in the Premier League

Southampton and Everton must both aim to pick up their first win of the season as the Saints travel to Goodison Park on Saturday. Mark Hughes’ men were unable to break down a rigid Burnley side, settling for a 0-0 draw last week.

The Saints saw a number of their new signings impress on their debut and Mark Hughes could hand one or two new additions a start this weekend.

Team News

Mark Hughes has no injury concerns to worry about at the moment, providing him with a number of options going into the game against the Toffees. New signing Danny Ings looked impressive coming on as a substitute for Stuart Armstrong and could be handed his first full start this weekend.

Probable Southampton XI

Manager: Mark Hughes

Formation: 4-4-2

Alex McCarthy (GK)

McCarthy has been impressive since snatching Fraser Forster’s spot from between the sticks. He will certainly retain his spot in the next game.

Cedric Soares (RB)

The Portuguese international has flourished under Mark Hughes’ system and will once again be deployed as a right-back.

Jannik Vestergaard (CB)

The Saints’ new signing looked calm and composed on his Premier League debut for the South Coast club. With Virgil van Dijk gone, Vestergaard could become their new leader at the back.

Wesley Hoedt (CB)

The Dutch international started ahead of Maya Yoshida and it seems as though he has sewn up the role for himself. He should be partnered alongside Vestergaard in this game as well.

Ryan Bertrand (LB)

Bertrand’s attacking potential in the squad is unrivalled and he should start for the Saints against Everton.

Ryan Bertrand

Mohamed Elyounoussi (RM)

Another debutant for the Saints, Elyounoussi looked electric after coming on in the second half. Hence, he should receive his first start of the season against Everton.

Oriol Romeu (CM)

The former Chelsea midfielder’s presence in the middle of the park is vital for the Saints. His tough-tackling aggressive style could prove to be a thorn for any opposition.

Mario Lemina (CM)

Lemina’s non-stop running and distribution will be absolutely vital for Hughes’ men. He should be partnered alongside Romeu once again.

Charlie Austin

Stuart Armstrong (LM)

Nathan Redmond failed to hit the heights last season which is why Armstrong should receive a starting spot ahead of him in the clash against the Toffees.

Charlie Austin (ST)

The Southampton hitman came close to scoring on a couple of occasions against the Clarets. He should be handed a regular role this season, given his prolific record in front of the goal.

Danny Ings (ST)

Ings seems like a completely different player at Southampton. A start could see him get on the scoresheet against the Toffees.
