Atletico Madrid signing this highly-rated Portuguese starlet would make them quite a force in Europe

Atletico Madrid opinion: Should Atletico sign Felix?

According to a report from The Sun, Atletico Madrid are closing in on the signing of Joao Felix from Benfica, with the reports claiming that the La Liga outfit has submitted a stunning £113million bid.

Amidst the interest from a swarm of Europe’s elite clubs, Atletico appears to be the front runner in capturing the Portuguese wonderkid. Diego Simeone cites Felix as the potential replacement for Antoine Griezmann, who has confirmed his exit this summer.

Felix – a star in the making

The 19-year-old caught everyone’s attention with an eye-catching spell with the Portuguese outfit last season. From a Europa League hat-trick to feature in the Portugal senior-team alongside Cristiano Ronaldo.

In the process, he racked up 20 goals and 11 assists in all competitions. A youth product of FC Porto and Benfica, Felix got promoted to the reserves squad of the latter club, where he made his initial impact.

He has already bagged 2 major title honours this season and also got included in the Europa League squad of the season.

Atletico Madrid need reinforcements

Simeone is in need of attacking reinforcements with the imminent departures of Griezmann, whose next destination appears to be Barcelona.

The French World Cup star hasn’t shown any signs of stopping since his move from Real Sociedad. He is currently the clubs’ leading scorer with 133 goals, which shows why he has been a real asset for Simeone’s side in the long run.

If someone has to dethrone Griezmann at Atletico then it has to be Felix. The Portuguese starlet carries the exact portfolio as the 28-year-old does, which is paying as a shadow striker.

Simeone has always stuck to the traditional 4-4-2 formation under which Griezmann developed as one of the world-class forwards. Now, it is a great chance for Felix to scale greater heights in Spain. He will be expected to play alongside Alvaro Morata or Angel Correa up in front.

Verdict

The Rojiblancos are poised for an exodus of star players this Summer, which prompts Simeone to overhaul the squad. And Felix would be an excellent first signing even though the transfer fee looks on the higher side. It is safe to say that they are betting on young talents.
