Aston Villa’s season would move in the right direction if they sign this Watford outcast quickly

Why signing Nathaniel Chalobah will plug the gaping holes in Aston Villa’s defence

According to a report from Sky Sports, Aston Villa are keen on bringing Watford midfielder Nathaniel Chalobah to Villa park to add to their midfield depth in their late push for promotion.

Villa have had an excellent season in terms of attack but have been very poor defensively. They haven’t even been able to nail down a top-half position and are currently right on the edge at 10th place.

They have scored a whopping 53 goals this campaign and with Chelsea loanee Tammy Abraham scoring goals for fun, it all just seems to be flowing consistently at Villa Park.

As promising as this sounds, their defensive record has set them quite a way back from their actual potential. They have drawn 12 games already which shows their inability to keep leads even against teams that are struggling in front.

As a consequence of this, they currently find themselves languishing in 10th place and 15 points off the top spot. But their hopes of promotion are still quite realistic if they’re to focus their energy on reaching the playoffs.

With just 4 points separating them and 6th-placed Derby County, some defensive stability will go a long way in their late-season push.

Defensive-midfield is not their strongest position and even though they have two quality players in Glenn Whelan and Mile Jedinak, aged 35 and 34 respectively, they are slowing down in term of physical mobility.

A younger, fresher player playing the anchor role could be the answer to Villa’s defensive woes. According to Sky Sports, out-of-favour Watford star Nathaniel Chalobah could be the man to come in and take over the midfield at Villa Park.

He is a Chelsea academy product and that is visible in his play. As his ability to read the play is excellent, he makes an amazing number of interceptions and blocks in the key areas of the pitch.

He is capable of winning the ball back quickly as well with his sharp tackling and strong running. He is also a very good passer of the ball and protects the defence behind him extremely well by even slotting in between them at times.

His talent is unquestionable and he has represented England, coming on as a stoppage-time substitute in a 3-2 away win against Spain in the recent UEFA Nations League A.

He has played just 6 games for his club this season, with 4 of those appearances coming off the bench. His quest for game time could bring him to Villa Park, who would also benefit from the deal. This is a win-win for both parties and must be completed at the earliest.
