Aston Villa’s attack would gain a lot of strength if they land this Malian giant in January

Why Aston Villa should make a move for Moussa Marega in January

Back in May, a report from the Birmingham Mail had claimed that Aston Villa were interested in signing FC Porto striker Moussa Marega. However, a deal didn’t go through during the summer window.

The Malian international, 28, has hit over 20 goals in both of his seasons with Porto. He scored 21 goals and picked up 11 assists this past season. And the 28-year-old has started the new campaign very well, bagging four goals and two assists in seven league games so far.

Considering Moussa Marega’s prolific goalscoring form for Porto over the last couple of seasons, Aston Villa should reignite their interest in the striker during the January transfer window.

Aston Villa spent a lot of money on 12 new players during the summer transfer window, including Brazilian striker Wesley Moraes. Wesley has notched up four goals so far this season, with two coming in the 5-1 rout of Norwich City at the Carrow Road.

But the problem for Dean Smith is that there’s no option on the bench to make the burly Brazilian for a starting spot at Villa Park.

Jonathan Kodjia isn’t the most prolific of goalscorers and is in the final year of his contract, while Kienan Davis still has a long way to go to start games in the Premier League. That’s where the signing of Moussa Marega would make sense for Smith’s Villans.

Marega’s sheer physicality, pace and power would be a huge asset to Aston Villa. He is a proven goalscorer at the top level and while he is obviously known for goals, the Malian would also offer Villa some creativity.

He has played both in the Portuguese top-flight and the UEFA Champions League, offering Villa a player with experience at the top level of football.

The Les Ulis-born talent primarily operates as a centre-forward but can also play as a right-winger. He is a commanding presence in the final third and can win a lot of aerial duels using his strength and power. All in all, Marega has the physical abilities to cope with English football.

Verdict

The acquisition of a quality centre-forward like Marega would undoubtedly bolster Dean Smith’s attacking options significantly at the Villa Park. If Aston Villa can pull this deal off, it would send shockwaves in the Premier League.
